flies there now<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<p>Marine Corps Air Station Yuma sits on the edge of the city of Yuma in the south-western corner of Arizona and shares its runways with Yuma International Airport. The site goes back to 1928, when the federal government bought 640 acres on the advice of Colonel Benjamin F. Fly and laid out dirt strips. In the Second World War it was Yuma Army Air Field, a flying and gunnery school with AT-6s and B-26s; after closing in 1945 it reopened in 1954 as an Air Force air-defence gunnery base, renamed Vincent Air Force Base in 1956.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force handed the field to the Navy on 1 January 1959, and the Marine Corps took it on; it was redesignated Marine Corps Air Station Yuma (Vincent Field) on 20 July 1962. Its desert weather and its ranges, the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range and the Barry M. Goldwater Range, made it the Corps&rsquo; main tactical training base: Marine Aircraft Group 13 flew most of the AV-8B Harriers from here, and Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One runs the Weapons and Tactics Instructor course for all of Marine tactical aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Yuma is also where the F-35B entered service. The first jet arrived on 16 November 2012, and VMFA-121 accepted its first three on 20 November. Today four F-35B squadrons fly from Yuma, together with the VMX-1 test squadron, the F-5N adversaries of VMFT-401 and MQ-9A Reapers of VMU-1. From January 1943 the 307th Single Engine Flying Training Group taught pilots on AT-6 Texans; in 1944 it switched to multi-engine training on the Martin B-26 Marauder, and a flexible gunnery school opened in November 1943.<\/p>\n<p>Flight training ended on 23 April 1945, gunnery training on 31 May, and the base closed on 1 November 1945. It was reactivated by Air Defense Command on 1 January 1954. The 4750th Training Wing (Air Defense) flew F-86D Sabres, F-94C Starfires, T-33s and B-45 target tugs, and the base hosted annual Air Force gunnery meets from 1954 to 1956. It became Yuma Air Force Base on 24 August 1954 and Vincent Air Force Base on 13 October 1956, after Brigadier General Clinton D. Vincent, who had died in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force years left a radar legacy too.
