presses its Essequibo claim<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cols\">\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">1965&ndash;1973: an army without aircraft, and an air wing in 1968<\/h3>\n<p>Guyana became independent in May 1966 with, in the words of the Wikipedia account of the period, a standing army of about 750 troops and no air or maritime forces. The Guyana Defence Force itself dates from 1 November 1965. Its air arm followed in 1968 as the Defence Force air wing, and in 1973 it was renamed the Guyana Defence Force Air Command; today the GDF calls it simply the Air Corps. Neither the GDF website nor the newspapers consulted give an exact founding day, a first commander or the first aircraft type, so this page does not either. What the Air Corps has always been is clear enough: a small transport and liaison service for a country of rivers, savannah and rainforest where many settlements can only be reached by air. The GDF lists its tasks today as transport, surveillance, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, disaster response and logistics.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">Border scares: the Rupununi, the Tigri area and the airstrips<\/h3>\n<p>The air wing was born into border trouble. In January 1969 ranchers and Amerindian rebels in the Rupununi attacked Lethem and blocked the airstrips at Lethem, Annai, Good Hope, Karanambo and Karasabai to stop troops landing; police and soldiers came in through an airstrip that had stayed open and the revolt was over within two days. Seven Guyanese, five of them police officers, were killed. Guyana accused Venezuela of training and arming the rebels; Venezuela&rsquo;s foreign minister denied it. Later that year, on 19 August 1969, Guyanese forces removed a Surinamese camp and a half-built airstrip in the Tigri area, which Suriname claims. Whether the new air wing&rsquo;s own aircraft flew in either episode is not stated in the sources checked, so neither appears here as an air operation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">Islanders and Skyvans: the old airframes that kept coming back<\/h3>\n<p>For most of its life the Air Corps has flown small, rugged British transports. Five Short Skyvans were acquired between 1979 and 1981, according to the Wikipedia list of operators, and they were believed to be out of use by 2019. In 2018 the government asked Parliament for G$484.2 million to buy refurbished aircraft, and the Air Corps received two Britten-Norman Islanders built in 1976 and two Skyvans built in 1977. Critics asked why an air force would buy types no longer in production; the Islanders, commissioned in August 2018, were still stripped down for inspections in July 2019 and had not flown for the GDF, Guyana Times reported. The Air Corps commanding officer, Courtney Burns, said they were wanted for search and rescue, medical evacuation and counter-narcotics work. Both pairs remain on the fleet list in 2026.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">Helicopters, a crash in the jungle and a new budget<\/h3>\n<p>Helicopters have been the Air Corps&rsquo; other tool. The Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, said in 2025 that the force had bought five Bell aircraft in the 1980s, two more in 2007 and two in 2021 and 2023; Wikipedia also lists an Alouette III, a Bell 212 and Mil Mi-8s among former types. A 2018-built Bell 412EPI landed on 13 March 2021. On 6 December 2023, during the crisis with Venezuela, a Bell 412 carrying seven servicemen to troops near the western border came down in the jungle of Region Seven; five died, among them a retired brigadier, and two survived. A draft investigation report was circulated to the GDF, the civil aviation authority and foreign bodies but had not been published by May 2026. For a force with so few helicopters, the loss was severe.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sh\">2024&ndash;2026: India, Bell and the Essequibo case at The Hague<\/h3>\n<p>Since 2024 the money has followed. Two HAL Dornier 228-201s from India arrived on 1 April 2024 and were commissioned at Air Station London, Timehri, on 17 November 2024. A Tecnam P2012 STOL followed in July 2025, and a US$16 million contract with Bell brought a new Bell 407 and Bell 429, commissioned at Ogle on 21 December 2025; the GDF says 40 per cent of its 2025 budget went to the Air Corps. The context is the Essequibo. Guyana holds that the 1899 award fixed the border and took the case to the International Court of Justice in 2018; Venezuela calls the award null and void, rejects the court&rsquo;s jurisdiction and in 2024 declared a state of &rsquo;Guayana Esequiba&rsquo;.
