Die Boeing B-52 Stratofortress has been in service for seventy years and is on course to fly for a hundred. It has outlasted the Soviet Union, the propeller, and most of the engineers who designed it. And the design that made all of that possible — one of the most successful aircraft in history — was thrown together in a Dayton hotel room over a single weekend in 1948.
It is one of aviation's best stories, and it is completely true: a swept-wing, eight-engine bomber sketched out in three days, its scale model whittled from balsa wood bought at a local hobby shop.

A disappointing Thursday
In October 1948 a Boeing team travelled to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton to pitch their latest heavy bomber. The proposal on the table was a big, straight-winged machine powered by turboprops. The Air Force's chief of bomber development, Colonel Pete Warden, was unimpressed. Turboprops were yesterday's idea; the new B-47 had shown what swept wings and jet engines could do. Warden wanted a pure-jet bomber — and he wanted to see it fast.
It was a Friday. Warden gave the Boeing engineers until Monday morning to come back with a completely new design. Instead of flying home defeated, the team checked into the Hotel Van Cleve in downtown Dayton and got to work.

One weekend, one airplane
What happened in that hotel room has become legend precisely because it is so improbable. Ed Wells, Boeing's vice-president of engineering, led the effort; George Schairer, the company's brilliant aerodynamicist, drove the shape. Two more senior engineers, Maynard Pennell and Bob Withington, happened to be in town on other business and were pulled in. By late that night the group had laid out an essentially new aeroplane: 35-degree swept wings and eight jet engines slung beneath them in pairs.
Over Saturday and Sunday they turned the concept into something they could hand over. Wells shepherded a crisp 33-page written proposal. And Schairer, wanting the generals to actually see the thing, walked to a nearby hobby shop, bought balsa wood and tools, and carved a 14-inch scale model of the bomber, mounting it neatly on a stand.
On Monday morning Schairer set the bound proposal and the little balsa model on Colonel Warden's desk. The shape sitting on that stand — long fuselage, high swept wings, eight engines — is instantly recognisable today. It was the B-52.

The plane that refused to age
The prototype YB-52 first flew in April 1952, and the bomber entered service with Strategic Air Command in 1955 as the flying leg of America's nuclear deterrent. Boeing built 744 of them before the line closed in 1962. And then, instead of retiring, the B-52 simply kept going — through Vietnam, the Cold War, the Gulf, Afghanistan, and on into an age of stealth and hypersonics.
Re-engined and re-equipped, the surviving B-52s are now expected to serve into the 2050s, which would give the type a working life of roughly a century. The pilots flying it today are the grandchildren of the men who first crewed it — and great-grandchildren of the engineers who dreamed it up over a weekend, with a balsa model and a deadline.

It is a useful reminder that great engineering is not always the product of endless committees and years of study. Sometimes it is six talented people, a hotel room, a hobby-shop model and a hard Monday deadline — and an aeroplane that ends up flying for a hundred years.
