On Friday evening at the Langham Hotel in London, Singapore Airlines was named the World's Best Airline for the sixth time in the history of the Skytrax World Airline Awards.

Qatar Airways, last year's winner and a nine-time holder of the title, took second. Cathay Pacific was third, ANA fourth and Turkish Airlines fifth, from a survey covering more than 300 airlines.

The awards are decided by passenger votes rather than a panel, which is both their strength and the reason people argue about them every September.

Singapore's Sixth

Singapore Airlines did not only take the headline award. It also won World's Best Economy Class and World's Best Economy Class Onboard Catering — which is arguably the more impressive pair, because economy is where an airline's promises meet the largest number of people.

Skytrax was founded in London in 1989 and has run the awards since 1999. The organisation is keen to point out that it pays for the survey and the ceremony itself, takes no sponsorship, charges no entry fee, and does not licence the award logos. Whatever you think of passenger-voted rankings, the funding model is unusually clean.

Qatar Airways and the New Wi-Fi Award

Second place came with four category wins for Qatar Airways, including World's Best Business Class for the thirteenth time — a run that makes Qsuite the most consistently decorated cabin product in the survey's history.

The more interesting one is new. Skytrax introduced a World's Best Onboard Wi-Fi category for 2026, and Qatar Airways took the inaugural award. That a connectivity category exists at all is a reasonable summary of how passenger priorities have shifted in a decade.

Where Europe Landed

Air France had the best European result: seventh overall, and a clean sweep in First Class — World's Best First Class, World's Best First Class Lounge Dining and World's Best First Class Comfort Amenities, plus Best Airline in Western Europe.

Turkish Airlines was named Best Airline in Europe for the eleventh time, along with World's Best Business Class Catering. Iberia took Best Airline Staff Service in Europe, LOT Polish Airlines won Best Airline in Central Europe, and Vueling won Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe for the first time.

Further down the top twenty, Lufthansa placed fourteenth, Iberia sixteenth, Virgin Atlantic eighteenth and Swiss nineteenth. For a continent with the densest short-haul market in the world, that is a modest showing against Asia and the Gulf — eight of the top ten are Asian or Middle Eastern carriers.

The Long-Running Winners

Some categories have become institutions. AirAsia won World's Best Low-Cost Airline, an award it has taken every year since 2010. Bangkok Airways was named World's Best Regional Airline for the tenth consecutive year. Scoot took World's Best Long Haul Low-Cost Airline for the sixth year running.

EVA Air won World's Best Premium Economy, a category it has a decent moral claim to: the airline introduced premium economy in 1992, before most of the industry had decided it was a cabin at all.

EGYPTAIR was named World's Most Improved Airline. oneworld reclaimed World's Best Airline Alliance for the first time since 2021.

What the Survey Actually Measures

Skytrax's chief executive framed the Singapore result in terms of consistency across categories rather than a single strong cabin.

The honest caveat on any passenger-voted award is that it measures perception, and perception is shaped by expectation. An airline that promises little and delivers it reliably will score differently from one that promises a great deal. The survey ran for a full year, in eight languages, across more than a hundred nationalities, which is about as broad a base as this kind of exercise gets.

It is still a popularity contest. It is just an unusually large, unusually well-funded and unusually transparent one.
