Every airline maintenance manager on earth felt a small twinge of recognition on Tuesday afternoon. An emergency escape slide inflated on the ground, with nobody evacuating, because somebody moved a door handle in the wrong sequence. It is one of the most common self-inflicted delays in commercial aviation.
It is considerably less common when the aircraft is the presidential jet and the passenger is standing fifty metres away in a helicopter.
On 9 September 2026, at Joint Base Andrews, a slide on the Boeing 747-8 that Qatar gave to the United States deployed while President Donald Trump was arriving to board it for a flight to Dallas. Military personnel triggered it accidentally. Trump stayed aboard Marine One for several minutes rather than making his usual transfer, and the departure slipped.

Why slides go off by themselves
An escape slide is not a piece of soft furnishing. It is a pressure vessel folded into a pack, connected to a bottle of compressed gas, and rigged to a girt bar that clips into the floor. When the door is “armed”, that girt bar is locked to the aircraft; open the door and the slide is dragged out of its housing, the bottle fires, and roughly two seconds later there is an inflated escape path lying on the tarmac.
When the door is “disarmed”, the girt bar is stowed and the door opens with the slide still packed. Everything therefore depends on one action performed in the right order at the right moment. Arm the door before departure, disarm it before opening on arrival. Get that backwards and the slide does exactly what it was designed to do, at exactly the wrong time.

Airlines treat inadvertent deployments seriously, and not out of embarrassment. The slide has to be removed, sent to a certified workshop, inspected, repacked and recertified, and the gas bottle recharged. Until it is back in place and signed off, that door is not available as an emergency exit, which usually means the aircraft cannot carry a full load of passengers, and often means it cannot go anywhere at all.
What the president said
Trump's own account to reporters on the tarmac was, in fairness, close enough to reality.
It took rather more than fifteen minutes. The aircraft reached Dallas at around 17:15 Eastern, roughly two hours behind schedule.
The aircraft this happened to
The jet in question is a Boeing 747-8 that Qatar donated to the US Department of Defense, valued at roughly $400 million, and which the United States has since spent hundreds of millions of dollars converting into a serviceable presidential aircraft. It flies with the 89th Airlift Wing under the designation VC-25B Bridge, the “Bridge” being an entirely literal reference to what it is for: covering the gap until the two purpose-built VC-25B aircraft actually arrive.

That is the context that makes a slide deployment more than a maintenance anecdote. This is a second-hand VIP airframe, converted at speed, being operated by a unit that did not spend twenty years learning its quirks. Aircraft do not care who is aboard. They punish unfamiliarity in exactly this way: not with a catastrophic failure, but with a door handle moved in the wrong order on a Tuesday afternoon.
Nobody was hurt, nothing was unsafe, and the flight went. Somewhere at Andrews, though, a slide is now on its way to a workshop, and somebody is filling in a form.
