BARS: Germany Bets on Ukraine’s Jet-Powered Missile-Drone

by | Nov 7, 2026 | Aviación militar, Noticias | 0 comments

BARS looks like a small cruise missile and flies like one. Launched from a rail with a rocket booster, it cruises on a miniature turbojet for hundreds of kilometres to its target. Ukraine has used it against targets deep inside Russia. Now Germany wants it too: first as the paymaster for Ukrainian production, and possibly, according to reports in October 2026, as a customer.

Datos rápidos

  • Tipo: Jet-powered long-range strike drone, often called a missile-drone
  • Fabricante: Ukrainian private company, not publicly named
  • Lanzamiento: Rail launch with a solid-fuel rocket booster
  • Motor: Miniature turbojet mounted above the rear fuselage
  • Rango: 700–800 km; up to 1,000 km claimed for the newer BARS RS
  • Velocidad: About 400–450 km/h cruise, 620 km/h top (Quwa); up to 700 km/h claimed for the upgraded version
  • Cabeza armada: Variants from about 22 kg to over 100 kg
  • German deal: Co-production agreement signed 8 July 2026; purchase talks reported 23–24 October 2026

Part Drone, Part Cruise Missile

BARS sits between a drone and a missile. It has a wingspan of about two metres and a twin-fin tail, and its small turbojet sits on top of the fuselage at the back. A rocket-assisted take-off motor kicks it off a launch rail, and from there it flies like a cruise missile. Baseline versions are credited with a range of 700 to 800 km. The newer BARS RS, shown at Eurosatory in 2026, is claimed by its manufacturer to reach 1,000 km. Published speeds vary: defence analysis site Quwa gives a cruise speed of 400 to 450 km/h and a top speed of 620 km/h, while the developer has claimed up to 700 km/h for the upgraded version. Warheads range from about 22 kg on the base BARS RS to 60 kg and 105 kg on heavier variants.

Ukraine has used BARS against Russian military targets, reportedly including facilities in Moscow. A company representative told Ukrainian media in September 2026 that Ukraine launches around 2,000 of the drones a month against refineries, power plants and substations.

What Germany Signed in July

On 8 July 2026, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius signed an implementation agreement on the joint production of BARS under the “Build with Ukraine” initiative. Germany finances production in the first stage, and all the systems produced go to Ukraine’s Defence Forces. It built on earlier German money for Ukrainian long-range strike: in May 2025 Berlin had already agreed to fund BARS purchases for Ukraine.

What Germany Is Now Discussing

The bigger shift came in October. On 23 October 2026 Bloomberg reported that Germany is in talks to buy thousands of long-range missiles to rebuild its own stocks, and that it is also talking to Ukraine about joint production and procurement of BARS. A German official confirmed to the Kyiv Independent the next day that a deal to buy BARS was being negotiated. Germany today has only the Taurus cruise missile, with a range of about 500 km, for long-range strike. Its planned purchase of US Tomahawk missiles and the Typhon launcher faces delays that could last up to five years, and the United States has warned allies to expect long waits for missile deliveries.

What the Viral Post Gets Right

The post going around is right that Germany has agreed to co-produce BARS with Ukraine, that the July agreement was signed by Andrii Sybiha and Boris Pistorius, that BARS is a jet-powered long-range weapon with upgraded versions claimed to reach about 1,000 km, and that Berlin is weighing it while US long-range missiles are delayed. It runs two separate things together, though. The July agreement is German money for BARS built for Ukraine’s forces; buying BARS for Germany’s own arsenal is a separate negotiation, reported in October and not yet concluded. And the speed claim is generous: published figures range from a 620 km/h top speed to a developer claim of up to 700 km/h, not “exceeding 700”.
