BAE Shadow EW: Electronic Warfare Small Enough for a Cheap Drone

Electronic warfare has always been an expensive aircraft’s privilege. The jamming pod on an EA-18G Growler is a large, power-hungry, individually precious thing, hung on an aircraft that costs tens of millions of dollars and is flown by people you very much want back.

That model does not survive contact with a war fought by small drones. If the aircraft costs less than the pod, the maths stops working.

BAE Systems launched its answer at the Air, Space and Cyber conference on 15 September: Shadow EW, a family of compact electronic warfare products built for small airborne platforms, designed around being cheap and produced in quantity rather than around being exquisite.

Built Before Anyone Asked For It

The most interesting thing about Shadow EW is not the hardware. It is that nobody ordered it.

Josh Niedzwiecki, who runs BAE’s Electronic Combat Solutions business, told reporters the company spent millions developing the family ahead of a specific requirement, on the strength of what it has been watching happen in Ukraine and the Middle East, and in response to pressure on industry to move faster.

Defence primes do not usually work that way. The normal sequence is a requirement, then a competition, then years of development against a specification that was written before the threat changed. Building first and finding the customer afterwards is start-up behaviour, which is precisely the point BAE is making.

Commercial Chips Are the Quiet Admission

BAE says Shadow EW uses commercial microchips for high-performance computing, and gives two reasons: production speed and supply chain efficiency.

Both are true. The unstated third reason is that a defence-specific processor takes years to qualify and costs a fortune, and by the time it is ready the threat it was specified against has moved. If the product is meant to be replaced or reprogrammed rather than maintained for thirty years, commercial silicon stops being a compromise and starts being the right answer.

The same logic runs through the rest of the description: open architecture, software-defined, field-upgradeable. None of that is new language. What is new is applying it to something deliberately cheap enough to put on an aircraft you might not get back.

What It Actually Has to Do

The listed mission set is broader than self-protection: situational awareness, targeting, deception, survivability, and what BAE calls collaborative effects delivery.

That last phrase is the one worth noticing. Collaborative effects delivery means several cheap platforms jamming or deceiving together, coordinating an effect that no single small aircraft could produce alone. It is the electronic warfare version of the drone swarm argument, and it only works if the individual unit is cheap enough to field in numbers.

Whether BAE can actually build them at that price, in that volume, is the part nobody can verify from a press release at a trade show. For now this is a product launch, not a contract.
