GCAP Fighter Electronics: Edgewing Awards G2E Contract

Most fighter contracts that make the news are about metal: airframes, engines, how many and how much. This one is about something you cannot photograph, and it may matter more than any of that.

On 10 September 2026, Edgewing — the company actually building the Global Combat Air Programme fighter — placed an 18-month contract with a four-company consortium to keep developing the aircraft’s nervous system. Not its radar. Its entire sensing, electronic-warfare and communications architecture, treated as one thing.

That last part is the point. GCAP is not being designed as an aeroplane that later gets sensors bolted into it.

A fighter designed around its senses

ISANKE & ICS is an ugly acronym for an elegant idea. Instead of a radar, plus a separate infrared search and track, plus a separate electronic warfare suite, plus separate radios and datalinks, GCAP treats all of it as one distributed system sharing apertures, processing and data.

“Non-kinetic effects” is the polite term for jamming, deception and cyber attack delivered through the same antennas that do the sensing. The aircraft listens, transmits, confuses and talks using shared hardware, and fuses the result into one picture.

Everything that made the F-35 formidable came from exactly this logic, and GCAP is pushing it further by designing it in from the first line of the specification rather than retrofitting it. The consortium’s own shorthand for the result is a flying sensor and information platform.

Three countries, four companies, one box

The industrial politics here are harder than the engineering. Britain, Italy and Japan each want real work, real intellectual property and real jobs. Radar and electronic warfare are the crown jewels of any combat aircraft — the part nations are least willing to hand to a partner.

G2E is the mechanism for doing it anyway. ELT Group and Leonardo from Italy, Mitsubishi Electric from Japan, and Leonardo UK are meant to operate as a single supplier rather than three national firms bolting their own boxes together and hoping they talk to each other.

Andrew Howard, the consortium’s interim general manager, was clear that this is the thing being tested.

He also noted that the team is moving to join the GCAP Agency and Edgewing at the programme headquarters in Reading — a detail that sounds like office logistics and is not. Co-location is how multinational programmes stop being a set of parallel national efforts held together by video calls.

Where this sits in a very tight schedule

This is not the headline contract. In July 2026 the three governments signed a deal worth around 4.6 billion pounds with Edgewing for the next design and development phase. The G2E award is a sub-contract flowing from that, which is precisely why it is a useful progress indicator: the money is reaching the companies that actually have to build things.

The schedule leaves no slack. A flying demonstrator is in final assembly for a first flight in 2027, and the operational aircraft is meant to be in service in 2035. BAE Systems has acknowledged that hitting that date means developing the core platform in roughly half the time that the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35 took.

An 18-month electronics contract signed in September 2026 runs to early 2028. On a programme aiming at 2035, that is not a comfortable margin.

The real competition

GCAP’s rivals are not only the American F-47 and the Franco-German-Spanish FCAS. They are the schedule and the politics. FCAS has spent years arguing about workshare. GCAP’s answer has been to split everything three ways and force the partners into shared companies at a shared headquarters.

Contracts like this one are how you find out whether that actually works. Canada has already joined as an observer, which suggests others are watching the answer closely.
