Anduril has a new Air Force contract, and the headline number is $85 million. The interesting part is everything the headline number leaves out.
The Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson has put the company on a programme called VOLARE, which unpacks into the gloriously unwieldy Digital System-Level Mission-Driven Integrated Design Methods for Aerospace Systems. What the Air Force is actually buying is software that models an aircraft’s whole vehicle systems, plus methods for designing thermal management.
Not an aircraft. Not a drone. A way of working out what an aircraft should be before anybody cuts metal.

About That $85 Million
It is a ceiling, not a cheque, and it is not Anduril’s alone. VOLARE is a multiple-award indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity vehicle: several companies hold prime positions against the same ceiling and then compete for the individual task orders that come out of it.
We know this because DCS Corporation, of Beavercreek, Ohio, announced its own prime position on 16 September, using the same scope wording and the same number.
Eight companies competed. So far exactly $50,000 has been obligated, on the first task order, out of fiscal 2026 research funds. That is not a typo, and it is entirely normal for this kind of vehicle. The ceiling describes the maximum the government could spend over a decade if it wanted to. The $50,000 describes what it has actually committed.

Why Thermal Management Keeps Coming Up
Look at the scope again: overall vehicle systems, and thermal management system design methodologies. That second item is not filler.
Modern combat aircraft are increasingly limited by heat rather than thrust. Every radar, every processor, every electronic warfare system turns electrical power into waste heat that has to go somewhere, and in a stealthy airframe you cannot simply open a duct and dump it overboard. The same constraint is why the F-35 needs an engine core upgrade before it can carry the Block 4 sensor suite it was promised.
So an Air Force research programme asking industry for better ways to design thermal management, modelled at system level alongside everything else, is the Air Force admitting it does not want to discover the cooling problem on the flight line again.
Anduril’s own film on getting the YFQ-44A Fury to first flight. Sixteen million people have watched it, which is a reminder that the company sells a story as effectively as it sells hardware.
Ten Years Is the Real Signal
The period of performance runs to 17 September 2036. A decade.
Nobody writes a ten-year period of performance for a study. This is the Air Force treating digital design methods as infrastructure it expects to keep buying and refining across multiple future aircraft programmes, in the same way it buys wind tunnel time.
Anduril has form here beyond the airframes. In April 2026 it won a Naval Postgraduate School and Office of Naval Research prize for a proposal folding digital modelling, simulation and flight testing into one development process for tactical missiles. VOLARE points the same philosophy at aircraft.
It is not a glamorous award. It will not fly past anyone at an airshow. But the companies that end up designing the aircraft after next are the ones holding the tools, and the Air Force just spent ten years’ worth of contracting authority deciding who gets to build them.
