It started with a phone call at a quarter to one in the morning. Three vans, apparently heading towards RAF Fairford, the Gloucestershire airfield that has launched American bombers against Iran for most of this year. By dawn on Sunday 27 September, five men were in custody, an Army bomb-disposal robot was working its way between the vehicles, and around 85 households in the village of Whelford had been told to leave their homes.

Britain's counter-terrorism police now lead the case. The five were first arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, then held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Several British papers report that detectives are examining a possible Iran link. Nobody in authority has confirmed one.

For anyone who has ever stood at the Fairford fence during the Royal International Air Tattoo, the images were jarring: armed police at roadblocks, a 400-metre cordon, and the grey outline of B-1B Lancers sitting on the ramp just beyond it.

Three Vans in the Dark

According to police, the call reported three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be travelling towards the air base. Armed officers responded and arrested five men in the Whelford area, the village that backs directly onto Fairford's perimeter. The men were taken into custody and remained there through Sunday.

The Telegraph, as cited by AeroTime, reported that the caller was a local farmer driving home who saw masked men run into the fields. Police statements themselves only describe a call about the vehicles.

By morning the Army's explosive ordnance disposal specialists were on scene. Helicopter footage aired by Sky News showed a robot moving between three white vans, two with their rear doors open and dark objects strewn around them. Police have not said what, if anything, the vehicles contained.

Gloucestershire Constabulary declared a major incident and evacuated homes to a nearby leisure centre. Senior officers stressed that they believed the incident was contained, and that the cordon was a precaution while the vans were examined.

Under the Terrorism Act 2000, suspects can be held for up to 14 days without charge, which gives detectives time to work through the vehicles, phones and any contacts before deciding on charges.

Why Fairford Matters

Fairford is a British base, but it has worked as America's main bomber airfield in Europe for decades. It hosts the headquarters of the US Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing, and since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran on 28 February it has been the launch point for long-range strikes on Iranian missile sites.

Air & Space Forces Magazine reports that about a dozen B-1B Lancers have been stationed there for roughly seven months. B-52 Stratofortresses have also flown from the base during the campaign, and it regularly handles U-2 reconnaissance jets and fighters in transit. The war traffic is also why the 2026 Royal International Air Tattoo never happened there.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has named Fairford publicly and said that bases used to attack Iran are legitimate targets, according to Stars and Stripes. That is the context in which every report of the arrests has been read.

Air & Space Forces Magazine also reported that security at the base had been tightened in the days before the arrests, including vehicles placed around the perimeter. A US Air Force spokesperson declined to discuss force-protection measures, citing operational security.

Trump Says More Is Coming

Speaking to reporters in Chicago on Sunday, President Donald Trump praised the operation and said the suspects had been watched for a long time. "We had them under view for a long time and we got them," he said, adding that they were looking to do "big damage."

British police have not corroborated that account. Their statements describe arrests that followed a public call about the vans, and make no reference to prior surveillance. Later that evening at Joint Base Andrews, Trump told reporters that more details would emerge soon. He did not elaborate.

So the questions that matter are still open. Who were the five? Were the vans carrying explosives? Was Fairford the target? Until detectives charge someone or release them, the honest answer to all three is: not yet known.
