At 07:00 on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, the first flight left Hollywood Burbank Airport's brand-new passenger terminal. The $1.3 billion building, on the opposite side of the airfield from the old one, replaces a complex whose original buildings date back to 1930.
It is bigger, all-electric and built to modern seismic and runway-separation standards. And it keeps the thing many Burbank regulars love most: you still walk across the ramp and up the airstairs to your plane. (The images in this article are the airport's official renderings of the new terminal.)

One Hall, One Checkpoint, One Baggage Claim
The old Burbank terminal was two terminals, A and B, in one building, with separate security checkpoints and part of the baggage claim outdoors. The new building puts everything under one roof: a single ticketing hall, a single eight-lane security checkpoint and an indoor baggage claim with three new carousels. It is around 50 per cent larger, with higher ceilings, charging points at every seat, and dining and shopping after security.
The 14 gates are all the same size, which lets airlines park any aircraft at any gate. That was not possible in the old layout. A new parking structure with more than 2,000 spaces, separate arrivals and departures roads, and a path and shuttle link to the Burbank Airport-North Metrolink station complete the project.

A Safety Project First
The airport authority calls the programme, branded Elevate BUR, a safety project. The old terminal sat closer to the runways than current FAA standards allow, and it was not built to modern earthquake and accessibility codes. Moving across the field fixed both problems at once. Burbank voters approved the plan in 2016 through Measure B, with 70 per cent support.
For passengers, the biggest change on day one was getting there. The main entrance moved to Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way, and local TV stations reported some confusion as travellers headed to the old address. The old building, which handled its last flights the day before, is expected to be demolished in 2027.
