The caption was eleven words long. “Golden hour. Live fire. Mothership operations with 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Army.”
That is the entirety of what has been made public about the US Army’s most secretive infantry unit testing a drone that carries other drones. It came from the manufacturer — a Florida start-up called Petrel Technologies — on social media, and one outlet picked it up.
Which is worth saying plainly up front, because the idea underneath it is genuinely interesting and the evidence for this particular event is genuinely thin.

What the AERO Sky Actually Is
Strip away the marketing and there is a real aircraft here, and a sensible one.
The AERO Sky is a hybrid VTOL: four lift rotors on booms for vertical take-off and landing, a pusher propeller for cruise, and a conventional wing in between. It needs no runway and no catapult. Eleven feet of span, about a hundred pounds all-up, six to eight hours in the air, and thirty to fifty pounds of payload.
The airframe is a carbon-fibre and balsa-wood blend, which sounds like a de Havilland Mosquito joke until you hear the reasoning: high strength-to-weight, useful vibration damping for sensors, and — crucially for an attritable aircraft — repairable in a field with basic tools.
Petrel markets three mission sets in its own shorthand: SEE, MOVE and STRIKE. SEE is long-endurance aerial intelligence. MOVE is what the company cheerfully calls an aerial pickup truck. STRIKE is the one everyone is interested in.

The Part That Is Actually Well Documented
Forget September for a moment. The event worth studying happened in April 2026, at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana, during a force-on-force live-fire rotation.
There the AERO Sky flew as a mothership for FPV one-way attack drones — not Petrel munitions, but the 101st Airborne Division’s own in-house-manufactured FPVs. The concept is simple: the larger aircraft carries the small, short-legged attack drones forward, releases them near the objective, and human FPV pilots take over for terminal guidance. It substitutes for artillery preparation of a target.
Two live drops. Both hit. Used to breach a position so dismounted troops could get through it. That is a small number, and it is a real one, on the record, with photographs of soldiers physically strapping FPVs to the airframe.
Petrel’s chief operating officer Chris Rothe — a former Green Beret who served with 10th Special Forces Group in Eastern Europe — frames the whole idea in terms of the Pacific.
That 100-to-200-mile figure is an aspiration for a theatre, not a demonstrated result. It has already started drifting into coverage as though it were a specification. It is not.
And the Part That Is Not
Here is what is publicly known about the 75th Ranger Regiment evaluation: nothing beyond that eleven-word caption.
No date. No location. No sub-unit. No number of strike drones carried. No confirmation that any drone was ever released. No Army spokesperson, no US Army Special Operations Command statement, no DVIDS imagery — a search of the Defense Department’s own photo service returns nothing at all for the aircraft. Breaking Defense, Defense News, Army Times and TWZ have not covered it.

The same caution applies to the eye-catching capability claims that arrived with the story: that a single operator can run the aircraft, that it launches within minutes, that it integrates with ATAK, and that it can route communications across mesh networks, satellite links and LTE cellular depending on what is available. Every one of those is a company statement, appearing in one paragraph in one outlet. No radio, waveform or terminal is named. No certification is cited.
The broader idea is not fringe. Anduril released footage in September of an H-60M Black Hawk rocket-launching an Altius-700 at Project Convergence Capstone 6, with the drone autonomously finding a target, passing data across the formation and striking. Air-launched effects are becoming ordinary. The question is who supplies them, and at what price.
From Banner Adverts to Breaching Fires
Petrel’s origin story is a good one. The company started life around 2021 as Sustainable Skylines, flying drones towing 1,000-square-foot advertising banners over Miami Beach — by its own account the first FAA-approved outfit in the United States to do it. Stonecipher and Rothe were college friends. Sustainable Skylines still exists as a sister brand.
Petrel came out of stealth on 10 February 2026 with $3.5 million in pre-seed funding from family offices, and a customer list that reads like a start-up in a hurry: down-selected by INDOPACOM for Pacific island logistics experiments, embedded with the Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps, flying for users at JRTC and for the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell.
Army Recognition, covering the Fort Polk work, put the necessary caveat on it: the aircraft is still moving through validation rather than fielded programme-of-record procurement, and the demonstration should be read as an operational test rather than an adoption decision.
That is the fair reading of September too. A start-up nineteen months out of the banner-towing business has put a hundred-pound aircraft in front of some of the most demanding customers in the US Army, and they keep asking it back. Whether the Rangers bought anything, nobody outside the wire knows.
