Altius-700: A Black Hawk Rocket-Launches Anduril’s Drone

The U.S. Army just turned its workhorse troop taxi into a launch platform for autonomous killers. Footage released by Anduril on 31 August shows an H-60M Black Hawk rocket-launching an Altius-700 from an external pylon, the drone streaking away across the Mojave before a formation of them hunts down a target on its own.

The Black Hawk is not a gunship. That job belongs to the AH-64 Apache. What the Army demonstrated at Project Convergence Capstone 6 is something stranger and arguably more useful: a utility helicopter acting as a mothership, throwing sensors and precision strike far beyond anything bolted to its own airframe.

What actually happened over the Mojave

According to Anduril, an H-60M crew employed an Altius-700 “hunter-killer team” that autonomously found the target, passed the data across the formation, and struck. In other words, the helicopter crew did not fly the drone onto the target. They released it, and the machines sorted out the rest between themselves.

The Mojave was not chosen for the scenery. The extreme desert heat let the Army validate the system's environmental resilience alongside its networking. It followed three days of flight testing in June at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, where H-60M aircrews launched and controlled multiple medium-range launched effects.

Anduril labelled the vehicles in the clip simply as Altius-700, but the footage shows one of them destroying what appears to be an armoured ground vehicle. Ahead of the event, the Army had identified the armed Altius-700M as the Long-Range Precision Munition it planned to fire from a Black Hawk, which strongly suggests the kinetic vehicle in the video is a 700M.

Why a utility helicopter, of all things

Launched effects are small uncrewed systems fired from an aircraft to do the dangerous work: surveillance, targeting, electronic warfare, communications relay, deception, or the strike itself. The appeal is obvious. A non-kinetic effect can scout far ahead of the formation while the crewed helicopter stays well outside the threat envelope. An armed one can hit something the helicopter could never safely approach.

The numbers explain the enthusiasm. A Hellfire obliges the helicopter to close to roughly 11 kilometres of whatever it is shooting at. An Altius-700M reportedly reaches out to about 160 kilometres and can loiter for over an hour on the way. That is not an incremental improvement in reach; it is a different way of fighting.

Sikorsky has been open about where this leads, and it is not one drone at a time.

The quiet part: this is Increment 1

The Army describes Increment 1 of the launched-effects capability as a fully government-owned and designed system, developed with the Utility Helicopters Project Office and DEVCOM's Aviation and Missile Center. Anduril's Altius family was among the systems flown at Capstone 6, though the Army has not publicly identified every effect used during the event.

Meanwhile the unmanned U-Hawk is being fitted with an internal launching system, so the effects ride inside the aircraft rather than on the wings. Put those two threads together and the destination is clear enough: an uncrewed Black Hawk, full of small autonomous weapons, flying ahead of everything that still carries people.
