The photograph looks like an accident in progress. Two columns of black smoke stand on the runway at Barksdale Air Force Base, thick enough to swallow an eight-engined bomber whole, and out of the murk a third B-52 Stratofortress is coming, wings level, still low. Nobody is putting a fire out. The smoke is the whole point.
This is a minimum interval takeoff, and for most of the Cold War it was Strategic Air Command's answer to one unbearable piece of arithmetic. A Soviet missile launched at a bomber base would arrive in roughly fifteen minutes. A bomber still on the ramp when it got there was not a bomber. It was a target with fuel in it.
So SAC stopped spacing its aircraft for safety and started spacing them for survival. Twelve seconds between bombers. Fifteen between tankers. Everything that could fly, gone before the first warhead arrived, and the crews flying through each other's wake and exhaust the whole way up.

Twelve seconds, and not thirteen
Civil aviation treats the air behind a heavy jet as something to be waited out. Wake vortices roll off the wingtips of a departing aircraft and sit in the runway environment for minutes, which is why a light aircraft following a widebody is held on the ground rather than allowed to follow it into the sky. The separation exists because the alternative kills people.
A minimum interval takeoff throws that away deliberately. The interval is not chosen because it is safe. It is chosen because it is the shortest gap at which a competent crew has a reasonable chance of keeping the aircraft upright, and because the number of aircraft you can save is a function of how small you are willing to make it.
Before the launch itself came the elephant walk: the whole force taxiing nose-to-tail in close formation towards the runway, a sight that got its name in the Second World War when thousand-bomber raids queued up the same way. The elephant walk is the parade. The MITO is what happens next.

Clearance worked by sight rather than by careful sequencing. Typically an aircraft received its takeoff clearance the moment the one ahead of it was on the runway — not airborne, not clear, just rolling. Every crew in the cell was committed to a runway that still had somebody else on it.
The klaxon and the cartridge
A MITO began long before the throttles moved. SAC kept a proportion of its bombers and tankers on ground alert, crews living beside the aircraft, and the launch signal was a klaxon — a sound every SAC veteran describes the same way, as something that emptied a building in seconds.
The problem with a Stratofortress is that eight engines take time to start, and a ground air cart takes time to arrive. So the alert aircraft were fitted with pyrotechnic starter cartridges: sealed charges whose propellant burns fast and hard, spinning a starter turbine directly. The Air Force is blunt about why. Barksdale's own description of a 2014 MITO exercise notes simply that starter cartridges filled with gunpowder are used for this takeoff instead of the standard compressed-air start.

The result is a bomber that appears, briefly, to be on fire. A grey-white cloud rolls out from under the wings, the ground crew disappears into it, and the aircraft comes out the other side with engines running. The popular description of the system has eight cartridges aboard, one per engine, though in practice crews often fired only a pair and used those engines' bleed air to spin up the rest.
None of it mattered unless the whole force was moving. The standard SAC benchmark was fifteen minutes from the first note of the klaxon to the last aircraft airborne, and it was a benchmark because that was roughly all the warning anyone expected to get.
Into the smoke
What made the B-52 version of this so visually extreme was water injection. To squeeze extra thrust out of the Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojets on takeoff, water was sprayed into the engines — effective, and filthy. The cooler combustion dumped large quantities of unburned fuel out of the tailpipes as dense black smoke. Every B-52 model except the H, which has TF33 turbofans, did this.
So the aircraft in position number four was not merely flying through the wake of number three. It was accelerating to rotation speed inside a wall of soot laid down by three aircraft ahead of it, unable to see the far end of the runway, in air that had been comprehensively stirred.
Lacklen's account does not end with the recovery. Once clear of the blast, crews adjusted heading to fly a path away from the aircraft in front, and then got away from the base as fast as they could — because in the real version of this exercise, the field they had just left, and everyone still on it, would shortly cease to exist.
There is a persistent belief among enthusiasts that a MITO came with a no-abort rule: keep going whatever happens, and if you cannot fly, steer off the pavement so the aircraft behind you can. The sentiment is true to the logic of the thing. The written procedure was less romantic. Speed milestones were called during the roll, and an aircraft that had not reached its target speed at the decision point aborted, exactly as on any other takeoff.

Mather, 16 December 1982
The risk was not theoretical. On the morning of 16 December 1982, a B-52G, serial 57-6482, lifted off from Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento on a training mission built around minimum interval takeoffs and landings. It was airborne about ten seconds behind the B-52 ahead of it — tighter than the twelve-second standard.
In the initial climb it hit the wake of the aircraft in front. The Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives records that the pilot reduced power in response and reduced it too far, flaming out all eight engines; the aircraft lost speed, stalled and struck the ground about a mile and a half from the runway, in a field with livestock in it. All nine on board were killed.
The crew list is the part that stays with you. Alongside the aircraft commander and two instructors were three student navigators and two student copilots — second lieutenants on a training sortie out of the B-52 schoolhouse at Castle AFB. The accident archive attributes the underlying error to the planning of the mission rather than to the men flying it: the departure sequence mixed aircraft that were using water injection for extra thrust with aircraft that were not, and the jet that crashed had the power boost while the one it was following did not.

It was not an isolated case. On 4 January 1961 a B-47E of the 100th Bomb Wing, second aircraft of a three-ship cell, lost control during a minimum interval takeoff from Pease AFB, hit trees and burned, killing all four aboard. And on 8 December 1964 a B-58 Hustler carrying five nuclear weapons suffered a landing gear failure during a MITO at Bunker Hill AFB in Indiana; the resulting fire consumed the aircraft and its weapons, contaminated the immediate area, and killed the navigator, who ejected. It is on the official list of Broken Arrow incidents.
SAC knew what the procedure cost. It kept practising it, because the alternative was a wing of intact bombers parked in a crater.
The film that thought reality looked too slow
All of which brings us to Rock Hudson.
In 1963 Universal released A Gathering of Eagles, directed by Delbert Mann, with Hudson as Colonel Jim Caldwell, a SAC wing commander trying to drag his unit through an operational readiness inspection. General Curtis LeMay — by then Air Force Chief of Staff, and previously the man who built SAC — used his influence to open doors, on the theory that the film would reassure Americans that the Air Force held terrifying weapons under tight control. The production got Beale Air Force Base, real B-52s and KC-135s, Titan I missile sites, and the personnel of the 456th Strategic Aerospace Wing. Tom Lehrer, of all people, wrote a song for it.
Its MITO sequence is one of the best pieces of Cold War aviation footage ever shot, and it circulates to this day. A clip posted in September 2026 by the Instagram account Peacemaker Aviation drew nearly nine thousand likes with a claim attached: that real MITOs used fifteen-second intervals, that the footage shows eight to ten seconds, and that the tighter spacing was staged because the director thought realistic intervals would look “too far apart” on film.
Treat that claim carefully
We could not corroborate the story about the director. It appears to originate with the Instagram post itself, and no production account we could find mentions staging the intervals. The standard reference works cut the other way: Wikipedia’s article on the minimum interval takeoff, citing Bill Yenne’s history of the B-52, describes the film’s runway scene as showing bombers departing at fifteen-second intervals. What is not in dispute is that the aircraft, the base and the crews were real, and that the film was nominated for an Academy Award for its sound effects — which, given the subject, is the correct category.
There is a genuinely eerie footnote to the shoot. While Mann and producer Sy Bartlett were filming at SAC headquarters at Offutt, they noticed the staff were unusually tense and could not work out why. They learned later what SAC had just learned: that Khrushchev intended to put nuclear missiles in Cuba.
What a MITO looks like now
Strategic Air Command was stood down in 1992 and the ground alert force went with it. The technique did not. It survives as a readiness test: not a drill for the end of the world, but a hard, unforgiving way of proving that a wing can generate every aircraft it owns and get them all off the ground.
The clearest recent example came from Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington. On 29 September 2021 the 92nd Air Refueling Wing launched twenty KC-135 Stratotankers at fifteen-second intervals after a mass elephant walk — the largest such launch in the base's history. Twenty aircraft at fifteen seconds is a shade under five minutes of continuous departures. The maintainers generated all twenty without a single spare.
It is a good line, and it is also true. Fairchild was at the time the Air Force's only super tanking wing, four KC-135 squadrons and more than sixty aircraft on one field — a bigger tanker force than most air arms on earth possess in total.

Bomber crews still fly it too. Barksdale's B-52s have run MITO exercises repeatedly over the past decade, cartridge starts and all. The smoke is thinner now — the surviving B-52H fleet has TF33 turbofans and no water injection — but the idea is unchanged: eight engines lit in seconds, an aircraft rolling before the one ahead has left the runway.
The distinction worth holding onto is between the elephant walk and the MITO. An elephant walk is a photograph. It says: look how many we have, and look how quickly we assembled them. A minimum interval takeoff is the sentence the photograph was written for. It says: and every one of them can be gone in five minutes.

Watch either clip long enough and the same thought arrives. Every one of those takeoffs was practice for a morning nobody wanted, on which the crews would have flown away from their own families with the certain knowledge that the runway behind them had minutes left. They did it anyway, twelve seconds apart, in each other's smoke, for forty years. Then they landed, and did it again the following week.
