Messerschmitt Bf 110 — Combat Record
WWII · Germany · First flight 1936 · Retired · Combat-proven: air-to-air
The story behind the numbers
Goering’s prestige heavy fighter began the war looking unstoppable — over Poland and France the Bf 110’s speed and cannon armament made it a genuine air-superiority weapon. The Battle of Britain ended that: against Spitfires and Hurricanes it was so vulnerable that its escorting Zerstörer formations needed escorts of their own, and the type was withdrawn from daylight fighting.
Then it found the role that made its real score: night fighting. Equipped with radar and upward-firing Schräge Musik cannon, Bf 110 night-fighter crews became the deadliest bomber-killers in history — Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer claimed 121 RAF heavy bombers, all on the 110. Most of the type’s thousands of victories came in the dark, against Bomber Command’s long war over Germany.
