The story behind the numbers
China’s stealth fighter has no combat record and no public shots fired — its ledger is presence: J-20s now patrol the East China Sea, shadow foreign aircraft, and appear wherever Beijing wants the message delivered. US Pacific commanders describe professional, increasingly confident intercepts.
Produced faster than any other 5th-generation type — estimates run past 300 airframes — the Mighty Dragon exists to contest a war both sides plan for and neither has fought. Its empty record is the point: like the F-22 it deters by capability, and unlike the F-22 it has never been exported, tested or seen up close.
