Some aircraft are remembered for what they did. The McDonnell F3H Demon is remembered for what it led to. The engine that broke the airplane

When it first flew on 7 August 1951, the Demon was genuinely advanced — the U.S. Navy’s first swept-wing fighter, a clean single-engine design built around the Westinghouse J40, an engine the Navy expected to power a whole generation of aircraft. That bet failed catastrophically.

The J40 delivered far less thrust than promised and proved dangerously unreliable. Between 1952 and 1955 engine-related problems contributed to eleven crashes and the deaths of four pilots. The program was terminated in 1955, and the Demon had to be hastily re-engined with the Allison J71 to fly at all.

McDonnell absorbed every lesson: how to build an all-weather, missile-armed carrier interceptor, how to marry radar to a fighter, and, painfully, how much thrust such an aircraft really needed. The company took all of it and scaled up into a bigger, twin-engined design with power to spare.
