La Compagnie Adds Newark to Düsseldorf, All Business Class

There is an airline that flies the Atlantic with no economy cabin at all. No premium economy either. Seventy-six seats, all of them business, all of them lying flat.

La Compagnie has been doing this since 2014, mostly out of Paris, and on Monday it announced where it is going next: Düsseldorf.

Not Frankfurt, not Munich, not Berlin. Düsseldorf, from Spring 2027, up to five times a week, and it will be the only airline flying the route nonstop.

Why an all-business airline can fly where nobody else does

The economics here are worth pausing on, because they are the opposite of how long-haul normally works.

A widebody needs a large catchment. Fill 250 or 300 seats across several fare classes and you need a big local market or a connecting bank feeding it. That is why transatlantic flying concentrates on a handful of hub pairs, and why secondary cities get routed through them.

A single-aisle A321neo with 76 flat beds needs something else entirely: not volume, but a reliable supply of people who will pay business fares. Get that and the route works at a fraction of the traffic a widebody would demand. It is the same logic that has let the A321LR and XLR open thin long-haul markets across the industry, applied at its most extreme.

North Rhine-Westphalia is the actual target

Düsseldorf is the airport. The market is the state behind it. North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany’s most populous region and one of the densest concentrations of industry in Europe, with a long history of American corporate presence.

“Düsseldorf represents a natural next chapter in La Compagnie’s development. At the heart of one of Europe’s most dynamic economic regions, with strong international businesses and longstanding ties to the United States, North Rhine-Westphalia is well suited to our unique all-business-class model.”
Christian Vernet — Chief Executive, La Compagnie

The airline said it was responding to clear demand in a region with deep and longstanding ties to the US. Translated: there are enough people in Cologne, Essen, Dortmund and Düsseldorf currently connecting through Frankfurt or Amsterdam to make a direct flight worth trying.

Inside the cabin La Compagnie plans to fly to Düsseldorf: 76 seats, all of them flat beds.

A two-aircraft airline adding a fourth city

The scale is what makes this genuinely unusual. La Compagnie currently operates two A321LRs. Adding Düsseldorf to Paris Orly, Nice and Milan Malpensa is not a marginal schedule change for an operation that size, which is why the route is tied to new metal: an A321LR arriving in 2027, and an A321XLR during 2028.

The XLR matters more than the LR. Its extra range is what turns a marginal transatlantic single-aisle route into a comfortable one, and it is the aircraft that will decide whether this model can keep expanding east into Europe.

Spring 2027 is a long way off, and announced routes have a habit of quietly not happening. But if it does fly, it will be one of the odder entries in the transatlantic timetable: a French airline connecting a German industrial region to New Jersey, in a narrowbody, with nobody in the back.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

When does La Compagnie start flying Düsseldorf to Newark?
The service is scheduled to begin in Spring 2027. La Compagnie announced the route on 7 September 2026 and plans to operate up to five flights a week during the summer season between Düsseldorf Airport and New York Newark Liberty International.
Is any other airline flying nonstop between Düsseldorf and Newark?
No. According to La Compagnie, when the service begins in 2027 it will be the only airline offering direct flights between Newark and Düsseldorf.
What is La Compagnie?
La Compagnie is a French boutique airline that operates an all-business-class transatlantic model. Its Airbus A321neo aircraft are fitted with 76 seats in a 2-2 layout, every one of which converts into a fully flat bed. It currently connects Newark with Paris Orly, Nice Côte d’Azur and Milan Malpensa.
What aircraft will fly the Düsseldorf route?
The route will be operated with an Airbus A321LR arriving in 2027, with an Airbus A321XLR joining the fleet during 2028. La Compagnie currently operates two A321LRs according to ch-aviation data.
How can an all-business-class airline make a route work that others cannot?
A widebody aircraft needs a large volume of passengers across several fare classes to fill 250 or more seats, which restricts long-haul flying to major hubs. A single-aisle A321neo with only 76 premium seats needs far fewer passengers, provided they are willing to pay business fares. That allows profitable service on thinner city pairs that a widebody could not sustain.
Why did La Compagnie choose Düsseldorf over Frankfurt or Munich?
Düsseldorf is the gateway to North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state and one of Europe’s densest industrial regions, with extensive American corporate ties. Chief executive Christian Vernet described the region as well suited to the airline’s all-business-class model, and the carrier said it was responding to clear demand there.
