Cargolux 747-8F LX-VCF: Landing Gear Collapses While Parked

by | Oct 24, 2026 | Luftfahrtwelt, Nachricht | 0 comments

Landing gear failures usually make headlines on touchdown, at speed, with a crew fighting to keep a heavy aircraft straight. This one happened with the aircraft standing still. On Friday morning, 23 October 2026, the left wing landing gear of a Cargolux Boeing 747-8F folded while the freighter stood on its stand at Luxembourg Airport.

Nobody was hurt. But the carrier is not treating it as a curiosity. Cargolux has ordered additional inspections of its entire 747-8F fleet worldwide, to be carried out on each aircraft before its next flight.

The aircraft involved is LX-VCF, one of the Luxembourg airline’s 747-8 freighters. It wears Cargolux’s “Not Without My Mask” special livery.

Kurzinfo

  • Flugzeug: Boeing 747-8F, registration LX-VCF
  • Operator: Cargolux Airlines International
  • Wann: Friday morning, 23 October 2026; fire service called at about 11:15 local time
  • Wo: Parked on its stand at Luxembourg Airport (Findel)
  • What failed: Left wing main landing gear collapsed
  • Verletzungen: None, according to Cargolux
  • Antwort: Additional inspections of the whole 747-8F fleet before each aircraft’s next flight

What happened at Findel

Luxembourg’s rescue service CGDIS told L’essentiel that firefighters were called to the airport, known locally as Findel, at around 11:15 local time. The aircraft was stationary at the time, the service said, and was neither taking off nor landing.

Cargolux then confirmed the event in a statement to local media. It said the recovery of the aircraft was being carried out in coordination with the relevant authorities, and that an investigation into the causes and circumstances had been opened. The airline has not named a cause, nor said which authority is leading the inquiry.

“Cargolux confirms that one of its Boeing 747-8F aircraft, registration LX-VCF, was involved in an incident in which the left landing gear collapsed. The incident occurred this morning while the aircraft was parked at its stand at Luxembourg Airport.”

As aeroTELEGRAPH reported, Cargolux did not say whether the precautionary checks would affect its schedule. Airways Magazine noted that the inspection order covers only the 747-8F, not the older 747-400 freighters the airline also flies.

Why a wing gear matters on a 747

The 747 does not stand on one pair of main legs but on four. Two wing gears sit under the wing roots and two body gears under the fuselage, each carrying a four-wheel bogie, with a twin-wheel nose gear up front: eighteen wheels in all. That spread of load is what lets a fully laden freighter use ordinary runways and taxiways.

It also means that when one wing gear gives way, the aircraft can settle towards that side onto its remaining legs, its wing and possibly an engine nacelle. Even on a stand, that kind of collapse can cause serious damage to an airframe worth well over a hundred million dollars new. Recovery means lifting the aircraft safely back onto its gear, which is slow and delicate work.

Why a gear would collapse with the aircraft at rest is exactly what investigators will want to know. Possible lines of inquiry in such events range from structural or hydraulic faults to ground handling and maintenance actions, but nothing has been published about LX-VCF and any cause would be speculation at this stage.

The 747-8F launch customer

Cargolux has a special relationship with the type. It was the launch customer for the 747-8F and took the first one in October 2011. According to L’essentiel, the airline today operates around 30 widebody aircraft from the 747 family, and it has ten Boeing 777-8F freighters on firm order to replace its oldest aircraft in the long run.

That makes the 747-8F the backbone of one of Europe’s largest all-cargo airlines. A fleet-wide inspection before the next flight is the cautious answer, and the right one: if something in the gear of one aircraft failed without warning, the airline wants to know quickly whether its sisters share the problem.

For now, LX-VCF sits at Findel waiting for recovery crews, and the rest of the fleet is getting a closer look than usual before it flies again.
