China Eastern LEAP-1A Deal: Engines Picked for 101 Airbus A320neo

by | Nov 7, 2026 | Luftfahrtwelt, Nachricht | 0 comments

In March, China Eastern Airlines told the Shanghai Stock Exchange it was buying 101 Airbus A320neo family jets. On Friday, 6 November 2026, it decided what will hang under their wings: CFM International's LEAP-1A, the same engine already turning on 215 of its neos.

The contract, which also covers spare engines and a long-term services agreement, was celebrated at a signing ceremony at the ninth China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. Neither side disclosed its value, but GE Aerospace, CFM's American parent alongside Safran, said it signed a record of more than $12.9 billion in sales and service agreements at the expo.

A Choice That Was Never Really in Doubt

Every A320neo customer faces the same fork in the road: the CFM LEAP-1A or the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan. The China Eastern LEAP-1A decision repeats the airline's earlier choice. Its entire neo fleet of 215 A320neos and A321neos already flies on CFM power.

The commonality runs deeper than the Airbus fleet. China Eastern also operates Boeing 737 MAX jets with the LEAP-1B and the home-built COMAC C919 with the LEAP-1C. On top of that, more than 380 of its A320ceo and 737NG aircraft fly on the older CFM56, according to CFM.

“CFM LEAP engines are helping us build one of the most modern fleets in the industry, and we're pleased to strengthen that relationship with this latest agreement.”

A GuruFocus report carried by Yahoo Finance put the engine count at 202 LEAP-1A units, two for each of the 101 jets. The same report said China Eastern separately agreed to buy 14 additional spare engines across the LEAP-1A, LEAP-1C and CFM56-7B families.

The Order Behind the Engines

The airframes were ordered on 25 March 2026, when China Eastern informed the Shanghai Stock Exchange that it was buying 101 A320neo, A321neo and A321XLR aircraft for about $15.8 billion at list prices. The airline said the jets would replace and update its existing fleet and add capacity, cutting fuel use and operating costs.

Deliveries run in batches from 2028 to 2032. According to Aviacionline, the schedule starts with nine aircraft in 2028 and peaks at 30 in 2030. The new jets follow the 100 A320neos China Eastern ordered in July 2022, part of a 292-aircraft joint purchase by China's three big state-owned airlines, with deliveries from 2024 to 2027.

The A321XLR is the most intriguing part of the mix. Its extra range lets a single-aisle jet fly routes once reserved for widebodies, and for an airline based in Shanghai that opens thinner international markets without the cost of a twin-aisle. China Eastern has not said where its XLRs will fly.

Four Decades of CFM in China

The relationship is a long one. China Eastern was CFM's first customer in mainland China, CFM says, dating back to 1985, when China Eastern Yunnan took delivery of its first Boeing 737-300 powered by CFM56-3C engines.

The CIIE has become a regular stage for the partnership. At last year's eighth edition, China Eastern closed a $615 million LEAP-1A agreement, Aviacionline reported. This year's deal ties the airline's narrowbody growth to CFM well into the 2030s.

“With this agreement, we're building on a relationship that spans more than four decades.”

CFM also used the occasion to talk up the LEAP's maturity. In the ten years since the engine entered service, the company says it has delivered more than 10,000 LEAPs, which have logged more than 100 million flight hours.

It is now rolling out a high-pressure turbine durability kit to extend time on wing and a reverse bleed system meant to ease the maintenance burden on airlines. China Eastern's Xiaoqun He framed the deal in exactly those terms, saying an airline's success depends not only on its engines' reliability and fuel efficiency but also on reliable support and services.

Warum das wichtig ist

For GE Aerospace, the Shanghai haul was a statement. The company said its agreements at the expo exceeded $12.9 billion, its largest total there, and its shares rose about 2% in Friday morning trading, according to GuruFocus.

Beyond China Eastern, the same report said GE reached supply and repair agreements with MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, a joint venture of China Southern Airlines and Germany's MTU Aero Engines. The expo, in other words, was about the long tail of engine support as much as new hardware.

For China Eastern, the decision keeps one engine family across almost its entire single-aisle fleet, from the C919 to the A321XLR. In airline economics, simplicity is its own kind of thrust.
