Cobra Warrior 26-2: RAF Exercise Ends After 942 Sorties

For three and a half weeks this autumn, Britain's skies hosted the RAF's biggest homeland defence exercise. Now the Royal Air Force has published the final tally for Exercise Cobra Warrior 26-2: 942 sorties, more than 2,500 flying hours and fourteen complex missions, flown by five NATO nations.

Cobra Warrior is the RAF's flagship large-force exercise, run twice a year, and this edition was hosted at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. This autumn's edition, which began on 14 September, was billed by the RAF as the largest test of UK homeland defence, a rehearsal for the day the country might have to defend its own airspace as part of a NATO force.

The numbers, released on 13 October, show how much flying that took.

A Graduation Exam in the Sky

Cobra Warrior is not only a NATO exercise. It is also the final exam for the RAF's most demanding course. This edition was the culmination of the Typhoon Qualified Weapons Instructor course, which trains the tactical leaders who go on to plan and lead large formations. The candidates are run by 29 Squadron, the Typhoon operational conversion unit, and Cobra Warrior is where they have to prove they can lead complex missions with allied aircraft under real pressure.

Those missions bring together much more than fighters. According to the RAF, the exercise combined combat air with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, air mobility, support helicopters, force protection, cyber, and command and control. When it launched the exercise in September, the RAF named Typhoons, F-35 Lightnings, P-8A Poseidons and Voyager tankers among the British aircraft taking part.

Keeping that machine running required RAF Global Enablement, the Tactical Medical Wing, the RAF Regiment and allied support units on the ground. The Air C2 Force, the RAF's command and control organisation, coordinated British and international aircraft in the air.

Five Nations, One Air War

The largest foreign contingent came from the Deutsche Luftwaffe: eleven Eurofighter Typhoons and about 200 personnel of Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 31 Boelcke, normally based at Nörvenich. The German detachment commander, Oberstleutnant Mike Schill, said the exercise gives German crews the chance to hone operational tactics and strengthen readiness alongside NATO partners. RAF Cranwell hosted German Air Force personnel during the exercise.

Der Italian Air Force also sent Typhoons. Its detachment commander, Maggiore Valerio C, called Cobra Warrior a first-class training exercise. The Netherlands and the United States completed the line-up. The RAF did not publish aircraft numbers for each nation beyond the German figure.

Why the RAF Calls It Homeland Defence

The framing of this edition matters. At the launch, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth said the threat from Russia makes this "the most dangerous period in my 35 years of military service". Cobra Warrior, in the RAF's own description, is about deterring threats, defending the homeland and being ready to fight as part of NATO if required.

That is a change in tone from the expeditionary exercises of the last two decades, when the scenario was usually a distant conflict. Here, the airspace being defended was the one above the bases the jets took off from. The final numbers, 942 sorties in roughly three and a half weeks, show what a sustained air defence effort over Britain looks like in practice: dozens of sorties a day, every day, by aircraft from five countries flying as one force.
