The timetable at Barra Airport in the Outer Hebrides is not fixed. It cannot be. The runway is a beach, and twice a day the Atlantic covers it. The United Kingdom’s aeronautical information publication states the position without drama: aerodrome availability is subject to tidal variation, and the hours of service regularly change because of it. Loganair publishes departure times that move through the day, week by week, because the sea decides.
Barra is the kind of airport that ends up on lists. The trouble is that most of those lists are wrong. Europe’s extreme airports are a magnet for recycled listicles, and the numbers in them have been copied so many times that the errors have hardened into facts. Skiathos is routinely called the shortest runway in Europe; it is 1,628 m, longer than three Courchevels laid end to end. Samedan is called Europe’s highest airport; it is not, and it has no scheduled service at all. Schiphol is called the lowest; there are three lower in the Netherlands alone.
So here are the European records that actually survive a look at the source documents, the qualifiers they need in order to be true, and the popular ones that fall apart. Most of what follows comes from national aeronautical information publications and from the airport operators themselves, because that is the only place these numbers are reliable.

Courchevel: the steepest paved runway in Europe
The altiport above Courchevel in the Savoie Alps is 537 m long and 40 m wide according to the Mairie de Courchevel, which runs it. EUROCONTROL’s SKYbrary entry gives 525 m. The operator describes a slope of up to 18.5 percent; AOPA and an interview with the airport’s own manager both put it at 18.66 percent. Take the range rather than a single figure, because the sources genuinely disagree and nobody is being careless.
The more important qualifier is what the percentage refers to. It is the steepest section, not the whole runway. AOPA measured one end as 205 feet higher than the other, which across 537 m works out at roughly 11.6 percent end to end; the segmented profile published for the strip runs 0.45 percent, then 18.66, then 12.50. A pilot lands uphill into a slope that changes under the wheels. That is harder than a constant gradient, and it is why Courchevel is flown by pilots holding a mountain rating rather than by anyone with a licence and a sense of adventure.

One number to distrust: Guinness World Records lists Courchevel under “steepest runway at an international airport” and gives the figure as 18.5 degrees. Degrees and percent are not the same thing. An 18.5-degree slope would be a 33.5 percent grade, roughly double the real gradient and considerably steeper than anything an aeroplane has ever landed on deliberately. It is a unit error in a reference work that other people then cite.
What Courchevel is not is a commercial airport. Only Alpine Airlines is authorised to fly commercial passenger aeroplane operations there, running in the order of 400 charters a season. The altiport handles roughly 6,500 movements in winter, about 70 percent of them helicopters, and something like 10,000 passengers across a season. Falcons and Citations are banned; the Pilatus PC-12 is the type you see most. Anyone describing Courchevel as Europe’s shortest runway for regular passenger service has skipped the part where you check whether the passengers are on a schedule. Helgoland-Düne: 480 metres, and a timetable to go with it
If the question is which European runway is shortest while still carrying flights you can book a seat on, to a published timetable, flown by a licensed carrier, the answer is a sandy island in the German Bight. Helgoland-Düne’s runway 15/33 is 480 m by 30 m of concrete, with no overrun areas at either end. It was lengthened from 400 m in 2005 specifically so that commercial multi-engine traffic could continue to use it under European rules.
The airfield operator states plainly that Ostfriesischer Flugdienst offers daily connections to Helgoland year-round, flown by the Britten-Norman Islander. Two cross runways of 371 m and 258 m complete a field that would fit comfortably inside the perimeter of most regional airports. There is a shorter strip with flights on it. Baltrum, in the East Frisian Islands, has 360 m of paved runway. But the island authority describes its flights as charter, and the airfield itself says it carries no operating obligation, which is the distinction that keeps Helgoland-Düne at the top of the scheduled list. Two even shorter British candidates, Out Skerries at 365 m and Papa Stour at 440 m, lost their scheduled service in March 2020.
Barra: the only tidal beach with an airline timetable
Barra has three runways marked on Traigh Mhòr, and the British aeronautical information publication gives their surface simply as sand. Runway 07/25 is 799 m, 15/33 is 846 m physically but 799 m declared for takeoff, and 11/29 is 680 m physically with 667 m declared. The declared distances are the ones that matter, which is why quoting 846 m as a usable runway length is misleading.

The cautions in the publication read like nowhere else in Europe: standing water, variable bearing strength, and cockle-pickers on the beach. There is no control tower, only an aerodrome flight information service, and satellite-based approaches exist for two of the three runways. The airport is run by Highland and Islands Airports Limited, a public corporation owned by the Scottish Ministers; the flights are Loganair’s, flown under a public service obligation running to October 2027 with two DHC-6 Twin Otters, G-HIAL and G-SGTS, owned by the Scottish Government itself.
The superlative needs care. Barra is not the only beach aeroplanes land on. Copalis in Washington State is a genuine tidal beach runway open to general aviation, and aircraft operate daily onto the gazetted beach on K’gari in Australia. What makes Barra singular is the combination: a tidal beach, a licensed airline, and a published timetable that shifts with the tide. The first scheduled service landed there in August 1936.

Westray to Papa Westray: a scheduled flight shorter than a runway
Guinness World Records recognises the hop between two of the North Isles of Orkney as the shortest domestic scheduled flight in the world. The distance is 2.74 km, about 1.7 miles, and the record was set on 1 December 1967. It is flown by a Britten-Norman Islander with eight seats and one pilot, as part of a triangle out of Kirkwall, so booking the Westray to Papa Westray leg specifically takes a little care.

The duration depends on what you count. Loganair says about 90 seconds. Guinness says two minutes including taxiing. The record, with a helpful wind, is 53 seconds. That record belongs to Captain Stuart Linklater, who flew the route more than 12,000 times across 24 years and retired in May 2013 with something like 1.3 million miles behind him on eight-seat aeroplanes.
The service is not a novelty laid on for tourists. Orkney Islands Council put the inter-island network out to tender and awarded it to Loganair from April 2025 to March 2029; it carried just under 22,000 passengers in 2023/24, up more than eight percent on the year before. For islanders it is a bus.

Longyearbyen: as far north as a ticket will take you
Svalbard Airport at Longyearbyen sits at roughly 78°15′N, with a single runway 10/28 of about 2,480 m by 45 m. Sources vary between 2,477 and 2,484 m, which is the sort of spread you get when different publications quote different declared distances. It is operated by Avinor and served in 2026 by SAS and Norwegian, plus a twice-weekly mail flight.

The qualifier here does real work. Ny-Ålesund, 76 km further north at about 78.93°N, also has scheduled flights: Kings Bay AS states on its own site that services run twice a week in winter and four times a week in summer. But Kings Bay sells the only tickets, there is no tourist access, and the airport is open only to traffic arranged in advance. So Longyearbyen is the northernmost airport with scheduled público airline service, and anything that drops the word public is wrong.
Gibraltar: the crossing that outlived the cars
For decades the standard fact about Gibraltar was that a four-lane road crossed the runway, with barriers dropping for every movement. That fact is now out of date, and the way it is out of date is more interesting than the original.
The Kingsway tunnel was inaugurated on 30 March 2023 and opened to traffic at one minute past midnight the following morning. The contract had been signed in November 2008. One contractor walked away shortly after signing, a second was dismissed, and roughly five years were lost to litigation. Fourteen years and about £34 million after the decision was taken, the road went under the runway in a single night, with no partial opening.

What survived is the part people assume was abolished. The Government of Gibraltar’s own announcement stated that from 31 March 2023 only pedestrians, cyclists, scooter and e-scooter riders and mobility scooter users would be allowed to cross the runway, and that all vehicles must use the tunnel. The current United Kingdom military aeronautical publication still describes a pedestrian and cycle lane crossing runway 09/27 at its midpoint, with air traffic control closing access when an arriving aircraft is 20 nautical miles out, and foreign-object-debris inspections of the intersection before any jet movement. Thousands of people still walk and cycle across a live international runway every day.
While correcting Gibraltar facts: the runway is 1,798 m by 45 m, with a landing distance available of 1,528 m at both ends. The figure of 1,680 m that circulates online matches nothing in the publication.
The records that do not survive
Skiathos does not have Europe’s shortest runway. It is 1,628 m of asphalt, long enough for a Boeing 757, and roughly three times Courchevel. The claim traces back through recycled danger lists; one recent example credits a Spanish ranking and then, under its Courchevel heading, describes an airstrip “a few meters away from the beautiful Maho Beach”, which is St Maarten, 7,000 km away. That is the level of care behind the number. The defensible version is that Skiathos is among the shortest runways in Europe used for scheduled commercial jet operations, which is a real and interesting thing to be.
Samedan is not Europe’s highest airport. The Engadin field sits at 5,600 ft, and its own briefing material says so, but four Alpine strips are higher, Courchevel among them at around 2,007 m. The usual rescue qualifier, highest with scheduled service, fails too, because Samedan has no scheduled service. What holds is narrower: the highest airport in Europe open to unrestricted public use and capable of business-jet-class instrument operations.
Schiphol is not Europe’s lowest airport. The Dutch publication gives an aerodrome elevation of minus 11 ft, with the apron checkpoint and thresholds down to minus 13 ft, so there is no single clean number to quote. Astrakhan in European Russia is at about minus 65 ft. Rotterdam and Lelystad are both lower than Schiphol without leaving the Netherlands.
The ones you have to measure differently
London City publishes a 5.5-degree glideslope at both ends, and the British publication forbids any United Kingdom-registered aeroplane from using the aerodrome unless its flight manual carries data and procedures for 5.5 degrees or steeper. It is the only British aerodrome with that requirement. Calling it the steepest approach in Europe is a step too far, though: Lugano publishes 6.65 degrees and Elba 6.0, and the reason London City still wins a narrower title is that Lugano has had no scheduled airline service since 2021 and Elba’s steep approach is for turboprops. Note the date on all this, because London City consulted in March 2026 on cutting its glideslope to 4.49 degrees, which would end the record.
Vágar in the Faroe Islands has the only hard published number on weather disruption anywhere in this subject. Writing in Airbus’s Safety First journal, Atlantic Airways’ vice-president of operations Joen Remmer and Stan Abbott recorded that the airline had more than 50 weather-related cancellations or diversions in 2011 alone, and noted that the nearest alternates are an hour’s flying away in Norway, Iceland or Scotland. The Faroes have no second runway. The airline became the first in Europe to fly the tightest category of satellite-guided approach in March 2012, which removed more than a dozen diversions in its first year.
Flores, in the Azores, is Europe’s westernmost airport at 31.13°W, beating neighbouring Corvo by about 1.3 km, which is counter-intuitive given that Corvo is the more isolated island. Both sit on the North American plate, and if Greenland is counted as European the record collapses entirely. That inconsistency is the most honest thing about the category.
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse is built entirely on French soil and administered jointly by France and Switzerland under a convention signed in 1949, with eight administrators from each country and a customs-free Swiss road running across French territory into Basel. It calls itself the world’s only binational airport. Since Rivera on the Uruguay-Brazil border was declared binational in 2023, the safer claim is that EuroAirport is the only airport jointly built, owned and administered by two sovereign states under a treaty.
Every one of these records needed a qualifier, and that is the point. An airport is only extreme in a particular direction, measured a particular way, and the moment a list drops the qualifier to make the sentence shorter, it stops being true. The airports are strange enough without the help.
