KLM celebrated its 107th birthday with a present for its long-haul passengers. On 8 October 2026, the Dutch airline announced free, high-speed Wi-Fi powered by Starlink on its intercontinental flights, in every cabin, starting in mid-2027.
The catch is small: you need to be a member of Flying Blue, the Air France-KLM loyalty programme, which costs nothing to join. Members log in with their account, and non-members can sign up before the flight or on board through the Wi-Fi portal. Once connected, KLM promises unlimited use, including streaming, music and video calls.
Datos rápidos
- Aerolínea: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
- Anunciado: 8 October 2026
- Qué: free, unlimited Starlink Wi-Fi on intercontinental flights
- Who gets it: all cabins; Flying Blue membership required (free to join)
- Cuando: phased rollout from mid-2027
- Already free: Wi-Fi on most of KLM's European fleet since early 2026
Why Starlink
KLM says it chose Starlink for its low latency and its coverage over oceans and remote routes, which is exactly where traditional satellite Wi-Fi tends to be slow or patchy. Starlink's satellites orbit far closer to Earth than the geostationary satellites older systems rely on, which is why the connection feels much more like broadband on the ground.
KLM's chief executive Marjan Rintel framed it as something passengers have wanted for a long time. Her other line from the announcement is the one that will appeal to anyone who has tried to work over the Atlantic: the Wi-Fi "will allow passengers to stay connected even high above the ocean."

Which Aircraft Get It
KLM has not said which aircraft will be fitted first, only that the rollout will be phased. Its long-haul fleet includes Boeing 777s and 787s, and the airline took delivery of its first Airbus A350 this month. One Mile at a Time expects the 777s, 787s and the new A350s to get Starlink and the ageing A330s to retire without it, but that is the site's own expectation rather than KLM's.
Short-haul flights are a separate story. KLM has offered free Wi-Fi on most of its European fleet since the start of 2026, using a different provider, and the Starlink announcement covers intercontinental flights only.
Catching Up With Europe
KLM is not first. Air France, its sister airline, and other big European carriers have already started their own Starlink rollouts, and outside Europe airlines such as Qatar Airways and Emirates have been installing it too. KLM had been one of the notable holdouts among the major European airlines.
For passengers, free and fast Wi-Fi is quickly becoming the baseline rather than a perk. For airlines, it is a way to bring people into their loyalty programmes, which is why so many tie it to a free membership. KLM's version arrives in mid-2027.
