A plumber driving home past Long Beach Airport on Thursday evening saw light spilling out of a hangar that had been shut for years. He turned around. What he found parked on the ramp was eighty feet of matte black airframe with no cockpit, no canopy, and no obvious explanation.
Ricky Schol has been photographing aircraft at Long Beach for sixteen years. He had never seen anything remotely like it there. His first guess, from a moving car, was an F-117 Nighthawk. It was not.
The aircraft is the RAVN X, built by Aevum Aerospace of Huntsville, Alabama, and it has been effectively invisible since 2020. Its reappearance is the first hard evidence in years that a programme most observers had written off is still breathing.

A Double Take on the Way Home
Schol was not looking for a story. He was driving.
He watched from roughly 100 feet away, he told TWZ, from the moment the aircraft came out until the moment it went back in. The ground crew lined it up on the runway. It moved a little. He heard no engines and saw no exhaust.
That last detail matters. A tow, a systems check, a photo call and a genuine autonomous taxi run all look broadly similar from a car park at night, and Aevum has not said which of them this was.

What the RAVN X Is Supposed to Do
The concept is genuinely clever, and it is not the same as conventional air launch. Aevum has always drawn a firm line between the RAVN X and systems like Northrop Grumman’s Pegasus or the late Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne, which carry a rocket aloft and drop it.
The RAVN X is meant to accelerate its rocket. The drone climbs to high altitude at high subsonic speed, then releases a rocket-powered second stage that is already moving fast and already above most of the atmosphere. The company has quoted a service ceiling of around 60,000 feet and two afterburning turbofans.
Published payload figures have never been consistent. Aevum and the outlets covering it have variously quoted 100 kg, 500 kg and “just over 1,000 pounds” to low Earth orbit. Treat all of them as marketing rather than specification — nothing has ever flown to test any of them.
The selling point was never raw capacity. It was responsiveness: a launch vehicle that takes off from an ordinary runway, needs no pad, no launch window queue and no fuelling crew, and can in principle be turned around in hours rather than weeks. For a Space Force that worries about losing satellites in a shooting war, that is an attractive pitch.
Attractive enough that in 2019 the US Air Force awarded Aevum the launch contract for ASLON-45, a small-satellite mission. That mission was scheduled to fly from Cecil Spaceport in Jacksonville, Florida, in the second half of 2021.
Then Nothing Happened for Five Years
The RAVN X was rolled out in front of cameras on 3 December 2020. Aevum called it the world’s first autonomous launch vehicle and the largest unmanned aircraft system by mass. Founder and chief executive Jay Skylus described a timeline that even at the time looked implausible: roughly 18 months of vehicle-level testing to secure airworthiness certification and a launch licence, then orbital launches by late 2021.
None of it happened. ASLON-45 did not fly on a RAVN X. The company went quiet. Its website carries no programme detail.

The launch-tracking site Gunter’s Space Page, which is about as unsentimental a source as exists in this business, wrote the programme off in blunt terms: it recorded that in December 2020 Aevum rolled out a mock-up while claiming it was a real prototype, that it doubted any real hardware had been produced, and that by August 2024 all activity appeared to have stopped.
Which is why a black airframe on a Long Beach ramp in September 2026 is news at all.
Is It Even a Real Aircraft?
Here is where honesty is more useful than excitement. Both TWZ et The Aviationist, working from Schol’s and photographer Matthew Dawson’s images, reached the same cautious conclusion: this still looks like a mockup.
The landing gear appears fixed and built for ground handling rather than flight. Schol heard no engines. The registration N567RX is reserved by Aevum to an address at the airport, which establishes ownership but says nothing about airworthiness. It may well be the same article that was wheeled out in Florida six years ago.
That is not automatically damning. Mockups get modified for ground testing, taxi trials, loads work and control-system integration all the time, and a programme that is quietly doing that work is a programme that is alive. But nobody should read these photographs as evidence that the RAVN X is close to flying.
Aevum has issued no statement. TWZ says it has approached Skylus and the company for comment.

Why This One Is Worth Watching
Aviation is littered with beautiful renders that never became metal. The honest reading of the RAVN X is that it has spent six years as the poster child for that problem.
But the underlying idea has not gone away. Responsive space launch is now a stated priority for the US Space Force, and every year that passes makes a runway-launched, pad-free system look more useful rather than less. If Aevum has spent its silent years turning a mockup into an aircraft, this is the first public sign of it.
For now, the most interesting thing about the RAVN X remains what it looked like to a plumber on his way home: something from the future, sitting in the dark, with nobody inside.
