Korean Air Switches On Free Starlink Wi-Fi on 15 September

Korean Air will switch on free Starlink Wi-Fi on 15 September 2026, and in doing so becomes the first full-service airline in East Asia to put SpaceX’s low-Earth-orbit network into its cabins.

It starts small: four aircraft. It is meant to finish large: most of the fleet by the end of 2027.

The interesting number is not the speed. It is the price, which is zero, in every cabin.

Why low orbit changes the experience

Traditional inflight internet uses geostationary satellites parked around 36,000 km above the equator. The physics of that distance are unforgiving: a signal has to travel roughly 72,000 km up and back, which builds in latency of several hundred milliseconds before anything else goes wrong.

That is why old cabin Wi-Fi felt broken even when it was technically working. Web pages loaded eventually. Anything interactive did not.

Starlink satellites orbit at roughly 340 to 560 km. The round trip collapses, and so does the latency. Published passenger speed-test data from carriers already flying the system shows average latency in the region of 60 milliseconds and average throughput in the low hundreds of megabits per second, with peaks considerably higher.

Korean Air’s own description of what it expects passengers to do with it is a fair summary of how far the bar has moved.

“Starlink is the world’s most advanced satellite constellation using a low-Earth orbit to deliver fast, reliable internet that enables passengers to stream high-definition video and music, play online games, browse the web, and access cloud-based applications.”

Free is the actual announcement

Airlines have sold connectivity by the hour, by the megabyte and by the flight for two decades, and passengers have consistently hated it. Making it free in economy as well as up front converts Wi-Fi from an ancillary revenue line into a competitive weapon.

That is the pattern now spreading. Qatar Airways went free with Starlink. United is rolling it out across its fleet. Korean Air is the first full-service carrier in East Asia to follow, and on the long transpacific and Europe routes where it competes hardest, the difference between working internet and theatrical internet is the sort of thing a frequent traveller actually books on.

The short advertisement before connecting is the small print. It is not really free; it is ad-supported, and the airline gets your name and seat number in exchange. That is a considerably better deal than 25 dollars for a session that cannot load a video call, but it is worth naming for what it is.

Four aircraft is not a fleet

Some realism is warranted. Three A350-900s and one 777-300ER is a rounding error against Korean Air’s operation. The overwhelming majority of its passengers will not encounter this in 2026.

Retrofit is the bottleneck. Fitting a Starlink terminal means an aircraft out of service, an antenna and radome on the crown of the fuselage, cabling, cabin access points, engineering sign-off and a supplemental type certificate for each type. Multiply that by a fleet and by a merger with Asiana, and end of 2027 is an ambitious target rather than a conservative one.

It also creates a transitional problem the airline has acknowledged: for the next stretch, whether your internet works depends on which airframe happens to be operating your flight. Two passengers on the same route on consecutive days will have entirely different experiences, and one of them will be paying.

The restriction on voice and video calls, meanwhile, is the sensible bit. The technology is now perfectly capable of carrying a video call from seat 43K. Whether anyone in 43J wants to hear it is a different question, and Korean Air has answered it correctly.
