Blackbeard on the Super Hornet: Hypersonic Testing Begins

Somebody at the Tailhook Association convention this past weekend was holding a camera when the U.S. Navy put a particular slide on the screen. On it: a pair of Castelion Blackbeard test articles hanging under the right wing of an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

That single frame confirms something the Navy had only promised until now. The service’s low-cost hypersonic strike missile is no longer a trolley-mounted display piece at a startup’s headquarters in California. It is on the jet.

And the timeline behind it is genuinely aggressive: Castelion and the Navy want Blackbeard in limited operational service no later than August 2028.

What the Tailhook slide actually showed

The image surfaced in a briefing at the Tailhook Association’s annual convention, the same briefing where the Navy pulled the wraps off the AIM-424 Malice long-range air-to-air missile. It appeared publicly only in passing, glimpsed in a recording of a podcast episode posted on Tuesday.

Two Blackbeard rounds, one wing, no fanfare. Where the photo was taken and when remains unknown. TWZ, which first reported the image, says it has asked the Navy for the full picture.

The rounds in the earlier company photograph carry blue stripes on both stages, the standard marking for an inert training or tracking round. That points to real hardware rather than a mockup, which matters: you do not load a mockup to prove fit and clearance, you load a representative round.

What the slide does not say is whether Blackbeard has actually been fired from an aircraft yet. A separate bullet in the Navy briefing reads “Project Alpha, hypersonic missile shot in 2026” without stating whether that milestone has already been passed.

A ballistic booster with something clever on top

Blackbeard does not look like a cruise missile because it is not one. The company photo shows a ballistic missile-style booster with a second body mounted on top, most likely an unpowered hypersonic glide vehicle. The booster does the accelerating and the climbing, then releases the glider toward the target.

Both stages wear cruciform fins. The upper one carries a pronounced chine line down its flank and a slightly beaked nose. It is also possible the second stage has a motor of its own, which would let it keep accelerating or hold high speed rather than simply gliding down its energy.

The new wing-loaded photograph adds one genuinely new detail: apertures on one side of that wedge-shaped nose. On the jet they point upward, but plenty of air-launched weapons flip after release.

Apertures at the nose usually mean a seeker. Imaging infrared is the obvious candidate, and it is the same solution used on a long list of existing anti-ship and land-attack weapons. Infrared has two things going for it here: it cannot be jammed by radio-frequency electronic warfare, and it is entirely passive, so the target gets no warning that it is being looked at.

Why the Navy wants this so badly

Carrier air wings have a range problem. Adversary air-defence bubbles keep expanding, which pushes the carrier further from anything worth hitting, which shortens the time a Super Hornet can spend on the far side of that bubble. A weapon that flies further and arrives faster buys back some of that lost geometry.

Speed also collapses the kill chain. Against a ship that is moving, the gap between spotting the target and hitting it is the whole problem. A hypersonic weapon shrinks that gap enough that the Navy needs to hold the target in view for far less time.

Then there is the part that makes procurement officers pay attention: cost. Hypersonic missiles have historically been silver-bullet weapons, too expensive to field in numbers and reserved for a handful of high-value targets. Castelion has built Blackbeard around mass production from the start.

Castelion released the video above to showcase continued work on Blackbeard, including the air-launched variant destined for the Super Hornet.

The numbers behind the push

The money has arrived in stages. In April, Castelion announced a $105 million Navy contract explicitly covering integration of the missile onto the Super Hornet airframe. On 25 August, the company announced a further award of roughly $90 million, covering work through August 2028 and the delivery of at least 50 missiles.

The Army is separately funding a surface-launched version. And in May the Pentagon laid out plans to acquire 12,000 Blackbeard missiles over three years, though it has not been made clear how that total splits between air-launched and surface-launched rounds.

If that schedule holds, the Navy gets its first operational air-launched hypersonic weapon inside two years. For a service that has spent a decade watching its strike range shrink relative to the threat, that is not a modest upgrade. It is the difference between a carrier that can reach the fight and one that politely waits outside.
