Here is a problem every fighter pilot eventually faces: you are behind an enemy jet, you have the advantage — and you are going too fast. Keep pulling and you will rocket right past him, handing him your tail. Ease off and he escapes. The classic answer is a maneuver named after a child’s toy: the high yo-yo.

It is one of the most elegant ideas in air combat, and it comes down to a single trick — spending speed in the one direction that does not throw it away.

The overshoot trap

In a turning fight, an attacker who is faster than the defender has a nasty tendency to overshoot: the extra closure carries him out in front of the target, reversing the roles in an instant. Simply hauling harder on the stick does not help — it bleeds speed violently and drags the nose down and behind.

Trading speed for a moment of patience

Instead of pulling flat, the attacker rolls and pulls up, out of the plane of the turn. Climbing bleeds off the excess speed — but instead of being wasted, that energy is banked as altitude. The closure drops, the overshoot is avoided, and the attacker floats momentarily above and behind the target. Then he rolls back down into the turn, converting that stored altitude back into speed and sliding neatly into a firing position.
