Letecká křídla Královských bahamských obranných sil

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force Air Wing, formed on 26 November 1981 with three second-hand Aero Commanders, is one of the smallest military air arms in the Americas — in 2026 it has, on the available evidence, two light aircraft, a Cessna Caravan and a Partenavia P.68, and its newest airborne capability is a drone programme rather than any manned aircraft.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force Air Wing story: the Flamingo, three Aero Commanders in 1981 and drones instead of aircraft

1979–1981: a navy first, and the Flamingo

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force is a maritime force first. The RBDF dates its own commissioning to 29 September 1979; Wikipedia gives 31 March 1980, the date of the Act of Parliament. Its founding purpose was to patrol a scattered archipelago against poaching, smuggling and illegal migration, and in its first months it learned what that could cost. On 10 May 1980, near Cay Santo Domingo in the southern Bahamas, the patrol boat HMBS Flamingo had arrested two Cuban fishing boats when, in the RBDF’s account, two Cuban MiG-21s strafed it with guns and rockets and sank it. Four marines were killed. Cuba first called the attack a mistake, then, the RBDF says, admitted its pilots had acted improperly, apologised and paid US$10 million. The Bahamas had no aircraft of its own at the time.

Three Aero Commanders from Bahamasair

The Air Wing followed eighteen months later. Wikipedia dates its formation to 26 November 1981 and records that its first aircraft were three Aero Commander 500s acquired from the national airline, Bahamasair. They were light twin-engine transports, suited to carrying people and spotting boats rather than to anything military in the narrow sense, and they were disposed of in 1990. The RBDF’s own historical overview, as reached for this page, says nothing about the Air Wing, and no official source consulted names its first commander or pilots. What the record does show is the pattern that has held ever since: a handful of civil-type aircraft, bought or passed on one or two at a time, supporting a navy.

Cessnas, a King Air and a floatplane

In 1992 a Cessna 402 joined the fleet, followed shortly by a Cessna 421. Late in 2005 a Beechcraft Super King Air 350 was delivered, the most capable aircraft the Air Wing has flown. In May 2009 came a Cessna 208 Caravan on floats and a Partenavia P.68, which Wikipedia says significantly improved surveillance and transport. The work is unglamorous and real: in June 2018 an RBDF aircraft spotted a vessel in distress near the Berry Islands, and in April 2020 the RBDF defended a service flight to Matthew Town, Inagua, after criticism on social media, explaining that no other flights were available. In November 2020 eleven Airwing personnel qualified as aircrew and airframe technicians on the Partenavia.

Drones instead of aircraft

The Bahamas has chosen to put new money into unmanned systems rather than manned aircraft. In December 2019, according to Wikipedia, it set up the Bahamas Unmanned Aerial System programme under a contract with Swift Engineering for 55 unmanned aerial vehicles. The RBDF runs a Bahamas National Unmanned Systems (BAHNUS) Academy, which completed its first training on the Swift 021 in November 2022, and a Drone Academy that was still holding outreach events in July 2026. For an archipelago the size of the Bahamas, long-endurance drones may be a cheaper way to watch the sea than aircraft. Whether the 55 were all delivered, and how many fly, is not published.

Today: two aircraft, and what that means

In 2026 the manned Air Wing is, on the published evidence, two aircraft: one Cessna 208B and one Partenavia P.68. The King Air 350, the Cessna 402 and the Cessna 421 are listed by Wikipedia as retired, without dates. That is a very small air arm by any measure. In its own reports of searches the RBDF names Operation Bahamas, Turks & Caicos (OPBAT), the joint counter-drug operation with the United States, alongside its own effort. The Airwing’s executive officer was named in 2025 as Senior Lieutenant Delron Mitchell; its commanding officer is not named in the sources reached. It has never flown combat aircraft and has no combat record.

Where the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Air Wing flies from

Černé kolíky jsou aktivní základny. The RBDF has not published where the Airwing’s two aircraft are kept; the one entry is Coral Harbour Base, the RBDF’s main base on New Providence, from which it said a service flight to Inagua departed in April 2020. Coral Harbour has no runway, and the entry assigns the Airwing to the RBDF’s main base, not to a confirmed air station. Lynden Pindling International Airport, the RAF’s Windsor Field in the Second World War, has no entry because no source reached says the Airwing is based there. No official coordinates were found for Coral Harbour, so it has no pin.
