Sky Wing: how the team came to be and what it flies today

A team on the basic trainer

Sky Wing was formed in 2011 by the PLA Air Force Aviation University in Changchun, Jilin Province. Together with Red Falcon, it ended the August 1st team’s fifty years as the PLAAF’s only display team. It flies the Nanchang CJ-6, a two-seat piston-engined basic trainer used for the first stage of military flying training. With the two school teams added, the PLAAF had three display teams for the first time.

Changchun

The Aviation University traces its roots to the Northeast Democratic Allied Army aviation school of 1946, the first flying school in PLA history. Formed in its present shape in 2004, it is a military university whose main task is training pilots, and it hosts the Changchun air show and air force open days. Sky Wing is far less publicised than August 1st, and few details of its formation size or history have been released.
