China Doesn’t Need the Best Stealth Jet — Just the Most

For twenty years, the Western answer to Chinese air power was simple: our jets are better. The F-22 and F-35 out-sense, out-stealth and out-network anything Beijing could field. That may still be true of any single aircraft. It may also be about to stop mattering.

Satellite imagery studied through 2026 tells a story that has rattled analysts on both sides of the Pacific. China is not just building stealth fighters — it is building them faster than any nation has built a modern combat aircraft in decades. And it is betting that enough good jets will beat a handful of great ones.

Five lines and a lot of concrete

The numbers come from imagery, not press releases. Analysts including J. Michael Dahm, presenting at the 2026 Air & Space Forces Association symposium, and the Royal United Services Institute estimate Chengdu is turning out roughly 100 to 120 J-20s a year. Satellite photos show the Chengdu Aircraft plant has added something like 278,700 square metres of floor space since 2021 — reportedly more than the entire complex America uses to build the F-35 — with about five assembly lines running at once.

Add the Shenyang J-35, and analysts think the combined Chinese fighter industry could be producing 300 to 400 advanced jets a year by 2027. Push the trend to 2030 and some assessments float a figure that would have sounded absurd a decade ago: around a thousand J-20s.

Quantity has a quality all its own

Here is why it matters. In a war across the vast distances of the Pacific, numbers are not a footnote — they are the whole equation. Aircraft need maintenance, get shot down, run out of missiles. A force that can absorb losses and keep generating sorties has options a smaller, finer force does not. The old Soviet maxim applies: quantity has a quality all its own.

None of this means the J-20 has caught the F-22. Western experts still credit American jets with real edges in stealth and sensor fusion. But China does not need to win every duel. It needs enough airframes that the duels stop being one-sided arithmetic — and its factories are on track to deliver exactly that.

China vs the United States: the gap in one table

Two lines jump out. America builds exactly one fifth-generation type, because the F-22 line was shut in 2012 after just 187 jets. And most of those F-35s are already spoken for — shared among roughly twenty partner air forces, so Washington’s own annual slice is far smaller than the headline number suggests. China keeps every airframe it builds.

But how good is the J-20, really?

None of this settles the question enthusiasts actually argue about: can the Mighty Dragon fight? The honest answer is that Western experts still rate the F-22 and F-35 ahead on the things that decide a modern air battle — low-observable finish, sensor fusion and the ability to share one picture across a whole formation. But the gap is narrowing, and the people who have flown near a J-20 are not dismissive.

His verdict on the airframe itself was cooler — the J-20 “seems okay… not anything to lose a lot of sleep over,” he said — before adding the sting in the tail: “they seem to be building a lot of them.” Independent analysts land in a similar place.

The engine it chased for fifteen years

For most of its life the J-20 flew on a compromise. Early jets used imported Russian AL-31 engines; from around 2021 they switched to the domestic WS-10C, an interim fix that still left the aircraft unable to supercruise. Then, in January 2026, photographs showed a new variant — the J-20A — flying in factory primer with the exhaust nozzles of the long-awaited WS-15, an engine China spent roughly fifteen years trying to perfect.

The WS-15 is estimated at around 180 kilonewtons of thrust with afterburner — enough, in theory, to make sustained supersonic cruise without afterburner credible for the first time. For comparison, the F-35’s F135 makes about 191 kN and the F-22’s F119 about 156 kN. Raw thrust was never China’s problem; reliability and heat were. What matters now is that the newest J-20s are being built around the WS-15 from day one — designed in, not retrofitted.

The part numbers can’t fix

Here is the uncomfortable subtlety for both sides. A stealth fighter is only as good as the network behind it. The real Western edge was never just the airframe — it was fusion: stitching radar, infrared and electronic-warfare data into a single picture and sharing it across the formation, back to the AWACS and out to the fleet. That is the hardest thing to copy, and the thing China has worked hardest to match.

Tellingly, some of the loudest warnings are about the American side of the ledger. US commanders have said openly that the ageing E-3 AWACS fleet may struggle to spot a J-20 in time — a gap in the sky over the Pacific that has nothing to do with how many jets China builds, and everything to do with the sensors watching for them.

Training the pilots to fly them

Airframes are the easy part. A thousand jets are useless without a thousand well-drilled crews, and this is where the picture gets murkier for Beijing. Turning out fighters fast is a factory problem China has clearly cracked. Generating high-quality flight hours, realistic aggressor training and genuine combat experience is a slower, human problem no assembly line can shortcut.

Here the West still holds a large, if quiet, advantage: decades of hard-won lessons, mature Red Flag-style exercises, and a training culture that treats simulated defeat as the whole point of the drill. Jets can be built in five years. A generation of instructors cannot — and that is the one part of the equation concrete and satellite imagery don’t capture.

The mirror image in America

The contrast is uncomfortable for Washington. The United States builds somewhere between 150 and 190 F-35s a year, but those are shared among a dozen partner nations, so America’s own slice is far smaller. US officials have said out loud that they cannot build fighters fast enough. China, watching, has drawn the obvious conclusion — and poured concrete.

The figures are estimates, and estimates can be wrong. But the assembly halls in the satellite pictures are very real. And they are still growing. For twenty years the West asked whether its jets were better. Beijing has quietly changed the question to: better than how many?
