Silver Stars
The Egyptian Air Force display team, flown by Air Academy instructors and grown from four L-29s in 1974 to ten K-8E jet trainers, and the only display team to fly over the Giza pyramids until 2022.
Silver Stars: how the team came to be and what it flies today
Born for the October War anniversary
The Silver Stars were formed in mid-1974 to fly at the first anniversary celebrations of the October War. The pilots were flying instructors at the Air Force College, and the first team flew four Aero L-29 Delfin jet trainers in standard dark green, brown and yellow camouflage. In 1984 the team moved to six Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jets, increased to nine the following year.
Alpha Jets to Karakorums
In 2003 the Alpha Jets gave way to the Hongdu K-8E Karakorum, with six aircraft at first and ten since 2010: nine in formation plus a solo. The aircraft wear white, red and black and carry smoke generators. The display runs through eight formations with single-aircraft passes, and all pilots remain flying instructors at the Egyptian Air Academy at Bilbeis, combining the display with teaching.
Displays over Cairo and Giza
The team mostly displays at home, over Cairo and Giza, and increasingly alongside foreign teams. Korean government media reported that only the Egyptian team had flown over the Giza pyramids before the Republic of Korea Air Force Black Eagles joined the Silver Stars for the Pyramids Air Show on 3 August 2022. In October 2023 the Silver Stars and the Saudi Falcons flew a joint display over the New Administrative Capital.
