Namibian Air Force combat record

Every war the Namibian Air Force has fought

Namibia’s air wing sent a flight of Alouette-type helicopters and Y-12 transports with the battalion group that defended the Kinshasa government in the Second Congo War; what they did there is not documented in the sources checked, and the figure of 30 NDF servicemen killed in action is Wikipedia’s, with no air wing loss found. The 2014 flood rescue in Zimbabwe is included as the service’s largest operation abroad since, with the air force’s own figures. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

From the Second Congo War to the Tokwe-Mukosi flood rescue of 2014.

A flight of Alouette-type helicopters and Y-12 transports supported the Namibian battalion group sent to defend the Kinshasa government.

President Sam Nujoma committed Namibia to the war in 1998 on behalf of its SADC obligations, alongside Angola and Zimbabwe, on the side of the Congolese government. Wikipedia’s account says that in February 1999 the Namibian force was organised around an infantry battalion group with staff, artillery and logistics support and a flight of Alouette helicopters and Y-12 transport aircraft from the air wing — the HAL-built Chetaks and Cheetahs and the Harbin Y-12s delivered in 1994–1997. The contingent grew to an estimated 1,600–2,000 in 2000–2001; the war cost Namibia an estimated 150,000 dollars a day.

Исход The Lusaka ceasefire was signed in July 1999 and the war is dated to 18 July 2003; Namibia’s withdrawal date was not confirmed from a reachable source.

Troop numbers, cost and casualties come from Wikipedia and the sources it cites; no NDF or Ministry of Defence account was reachable. What the helicopters and Y-12s did in the Congo is not documented in the sources checked.

Tokwe-Mukosi flood rescueZimbabwe, February 2014ВВС Намибии 2014 Alouette III (HAL Chetak), Harbin Z-9 0

Humanitarian rescue: three helicopters flew stranded people out of the Tokwe-Mukosi river basin.

At Zimbabwe’s request the air force sent two Indian-built Alouette III-type helicopters and a Harbin Z-9, with six pilots and seven technicians, to the flooded Tokwe-Mukosi basin in Masvingo province. Planned for five days, the mission was extended to nine and flew 38.6 hours. Air Vice Marshal Martin Pinehas, then commander, said the Air Force of Zimbabwe had sent helicopters to Namibia’s Zambezi floods in 2006, and that the response should be seen not as payback but as strengthening SADC cooperation.

Исход More than 600 people rescued; the detachment returned home in late February 2014.

Figures are the Namibian Air Force’s, as reported by defenceWeb.
