Guyana Defence Force Air Corps combat record

Военно-воздушные силы Гайаны и пограничные операции 1969 года

The Air Corps has no combat aircraft and no recorded combat. Two ground operations of 1969 are listed for context: the Rupununi uprising, which turned on the airstrips around Lethem and which Guyana said had been trained and armed in Venezuela, a charge Venezuela’s foreign minister denied; and the Tigri area, which Guyana administers and Suriname claims. Venezuela claims the Essequibo and calls the 1899 award null and void; Guyana holds that the award fixed the border, and the International Court of Justice heard the merits in May 2026, its judgment pending on 1 October 2026. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

The Rupununi uprising and the Tigri area, both in 1969; no source checked records an air role in either.

GDF troops and police landed at an airstrip that had stayed open about 8 km from Lethem and put down the revolt in two days. The part played by the air wing’s own aircraft is not stated in the sources checked.

On 2 January 1969 rebels led by Valerie Hart attacked Lethem, seized officials and blocked the airstrips at Lethem, Annai, Good Hope, Karanambo and Karasabai to keep troops out. Police and GDF soldiers flew into an airstrip that remained open and were fired on as they landed. Guyana told the United Nations it had proof the rebels had been trained and armed in Venezuela; the Venezuelan minister Iribarren Borges denied it.

Исход The uprising collapsed within two days; many rebels fled to Venezuela and Brazil.

No source consulted confirms which aircraft carried the troops or whether the air wing flew them; the row is kept because the GDF’s air lineage dates from 1968 and the operation turned on airstrips.

Five police officers and two civilians were killed in the attack on Lethem. Claims that Guyanese forces killed Amerindians range from two or three (attributed by Sanders to reliable sources) to rumours of up to 70; the Guyanese government denied any killings.

Ground operation; no air role is recorded in the sources checked.

In mid-August 1969 GDF patrols found a Surinamese camp and a partly built airstrip in the Tigri area, which Guyana administers and Suriname claims. On 19 August 1969 the GDF moved against it and expelled the Surinamese. In December 1967 Guyanese forces had already ordered a Surinamese survey party out. Suriname’s position is that the area is Surinamese and that Guyana has not honoured the 1970 withdrawal agreement; Guyana continues to administer it.

Исход The camp at Tigri was taken by Guyana; in November 1970 both governments agreed in Trinidad to withdraw forces from the area.

Kept for context: it is the GDF’s other border operation of 1969, but no source consulted records Air Corps involvement.
