India has picked a test pilot to lead its air force through one of its most demanding decades. The government announced on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, that Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, currently Vice Chief of the Air Staff, will become the next Chief of the Fuerza Aérea de la India.
Dixit takes over on 31 October 2026, when Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh retires. He inherits a force short of fighter squadrons, waiting on delayed Tejas deliveries and fresh from combat in Operation Sindoor.
Datos rápidos
- Appointment: Chief of the Air Staff, Indian Air Force
- Anunciado: 6 October 2026
- Takes charge: 31 October 2026
- Succeeds: Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh
- Commissioned: December 1986, fighter stream
- Flying experience: More than 3,500 hours; experimental test pilot and qualified flying instructor
A Fighter Pilot and Test Pilot
Dixit was commissioned into the Indian Air Force’s fighter stream in December 1986. Over four decades he has logged more than 3,500 flying hours on types including the Mirage 2000, MiG variants, the Jaguar, the LCA Tejas, the Hawk, the Kiran trainer and the IL-78 tanker, according to The Week. He is both an experimental test pilot and a qualified flying instructor, an unusual combination for a service chief.
His operational record includes Operation Safed Sagar, the air campaign during the 1999 Kargil war, as well as Operation Rakshak and Operation Sindoor. He has commanded a frontline fighter base in the western sector and a fighter training base in the south, led Central Air Command, and served as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee, before becoming Vice Chief earlier this year.

The In-Tray
The job Dixit inherits is not an easy one. His predecessor used his final press conference in early October to warn that the Indian Air Force needs 36 to 40 new fighters a year just to rebuild its strength, as older types retire faster than new ones arrive. The service has 180 Tejas Mk1A fighters on order, and The Tribune reports that the first is expected before the end of the year.
Beyond the Tejas, the new chief will oversee decisions on a medium transport aircraft, long-range missiles and air defence networks, upgrades to the Su-30MKI fleet and the effort to make spare parts for Russian-built aircraft in India. A test pilot who has flown the Tejas himself may be well placed to push that programme along.
