In April 2026 the US Navy released a short note with an unusually literal headline: a CH-53K had lifted a CH-53K.
One King Stallion picked up another King Stallion and flew away with it. Not a stripped hulk, not a mock-up. A helicopter carrying a helicopter, because the Marine Corps wanted to know whether it could recover one of its own from somewhere a truck cannot reach.
That is the whole point of the aircraft, and it is why the CH-53K is the most powerful helicopter the United States has ever put into service.

Three engines, and why that is not the headline
The King Stallion has three General Electric T408 turboshafts, and almost every article about it makes the same mistake: treating the third engine as the innovation.
It is not. The CH-53E Super Stallion, which has been flying since the 1970s, also has three engines. The E got its third engine and its seventh rotor blade at the same time, precisely to turn the twin-engined CH-53D into something that could lift properly.
What changed is the size of them. The E's three T64s produce about 4,380 shaft horsepower each, roughly 13,140 in total. The K's three T408s produce somewhere between 7,332 and 7,500 shp each depending on whether you take the NAVAIR installed rating or the manufacturer figure, which lands the total between about 22,000 and 22,500 shp. That is around seventy per cent more installed power in an airframe of broadly similar dimensions.

The rotor blades are new too, even though the count and diameter are unchanged from the E: fourth-generation all-composite blades with swept anhedral tips, on an elastomeric head. And the whole thing is fly-by-wire, which no previous H-53 was.
What 36,000 pounds actually means
The number quoted everywhere is 36,000 lb, and it is real, but it needs a footnote. That is the rating of the centre cargo hook. There are three hooks; the forward and aft ones are rated at 25,200 lb each.
The figure that mattered to the Marine Corps was different and less glamorous: 27,000 lb carried 110 nautical miles, in 91.5 degrees Fahrenheit at 3,000 feet. Hot and high is where helicopters lose their performance, and in those conditions the K carries roughly three times what the E manages.
The maximum lift was first demonstrated on 10 February 2018, when the aircraft got airborne at a gross weight just over 91,000 lb, the heaviest any Sikorsky helicopter has ever flown.
Inside, the cabin runs 30 feet by 9 feet by 6 feet 6 inches, about a foot wider than the E and twelve per cent bigger by volume. That extra foot is the difference between fitting an up-armoured HMMWV internally and not. It also takes two standard 463L pallets at 10,000 lb apiece.

Fetching things nobody else can reach
The recovery mission has become the type's calling card. In September 2021, on its first official fleet task, a CH-53K went up Mount Hogue in California's White Mountains to bring back a US Navy MH-60S that had put down hard. In October 2023 a squadron aircraft did it again in the Inyo National Forest.
In February 2023 the aircraft went to sea for trials aboard USS Arlington.

She also made an observation that says a lot about the margin the aircraft has. Pilots lifting something in the region of 28,000 lb report very little feel in the cockpit that there is a significant load underneath at all.
It has not been a smooth programme
None of this arrived easily. Development began in 2003. The first flight slipped over problems with titanium quill shafts in the transmission. Later testing turned up engines reingesting their own exhaust gas, limited service life on rotor gearboxes, and tail rotor and driveshaft deficiencies serious enough to force a restructuring.
The Pentagon's operational test office assessed the aircraft as not operationally suitable in its report at the end of 2022. Reliability and maintainability were acceptable, but availability was too low to sustain operations, the automatic blade-fold system had a poor success rate, and desert flying was eroding the rotor blades faster than expected. A 2025 government audit counted 126 distinct technical issues found in developmental testing after production had already begun.
Cost estimates vary by nearly a factor of two depending on what you include. Programme unit cost including all development sits around $149 million; procurement-only unit cost is closer to $109 million; the September 2025 multi-year contract, worth $10.855 billion for up to 99 aircraft delivered between 2029 and 2034, works out at roughly $110 million a copy. Somewhere between $110 and $150 million is the honest answer.
Who is buying
A full-rate production decision was signed in December 2022, but that is a decision, not a state. The line is still ramping; the 16-aircraft-per-year full rate is expected in the 2029 financial year. Twenty-five had been delivered by late April 2026.
The Marine Corps is the only operator flying it. Israel has twelve on order, to be called Pere, with first arrivals expected in 2028 and a reactivated squadron waiting for them. Germany looked hard at the King Stallion and in June 2022 bought sixty Boeing CH-47F Chinooks instead, on grounds of cost and NATO interoperability: roughly sixty Chinooks for the price of forty-four King Stallions.
That trade-off is the whole argument about this aircraft. It is extraordinarily expensive and it has been extraordinarily difficult. It is also the only Western helicopter that can pick up another helicopter off a mountain and carry it home, and there are days when that is the only thing that will do.
