RAF Fairford Plot: UK PM Burnham Sees ‘Strong Indications’ of Iran Role

Britain has named a suspect state. Four days after police arrested five men near RAF Fairford, the Gloucestershire base that hosts American bombers, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the BBC on 30 September that there are strong indications Iran played a part.

It is the first time London has publicly linked Tehran to the incident. Iran's embassy has rejected the claim as unfounded and malicious. Police say the counter-terrorism investigation is ongoing, and no one has been charged.

What Happened at Fairford

According to Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of the Metropolitan Police, officers were called out in the early hours of Sunday after receiving a range of information, including a call from a member of the public about several vehicles acting suspiciously close to the base. Five men were arrested near Whelford, about a mile from the airfield.

Police found no improvised explosive devices, but recovered petrol from the vehicles. The men, all British and aged between 23 and 25, were held on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and of preparing acts of terrorism. They were later released on bail.

“There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford, but of course it remains an ongoing, complex, and serious police investigation.”
Andy Burnham — UK Prime Minister, speaking to the BBC, 30 September 2026

Why Fairford Matters

RAF Fairford is the US Air Force's main bomber forward operating base in Europe. B-1B Lancers are currently deployed there, and earlier in 2026 the UK allowed American aircraft to operate from Fairford for limited defensive actions linked to Iran's missile capabilities.

That made the base a target in Tehran's rhetoric. In July 2026, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps called RAF Fairford a legitimate target and warned that any British base used for attacks on Iranian territory would face retaliation. Over the weekend, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the incident clearly involved the hands of a foreign actor.

What Comes Next

Burnham said the UK is working closely with US officials and would say more in due course. Police describe the case as complex, and with all five men out on bail, much of the evidence behind the Iran link has not been made public. Iran denies any involvement and accuses London of feeding what its embassy called Iranophobia propaganda.

For now, the bombers keep flying. But the episode shows how a Cotswolds airfield best known for the Royal International Air Tattoo has become a frontline target in a war being fought thousands of miles away.
