Každá válka, kterou Mosambikské letectvo bojovalo
The air war against RENAMO from 1977 to 1992 is barely documented in checkable sources, and no sortie or loss figure is given for it. In Cabo Delgado much of the armed air work of 2019–2021 was done by contractors the government hired: Amnesty International found in March 2021 that crews of the Dyck Advisory Group fired indiscriminately from helicopters, and those are Amnesty’s findings; Wagner’s role and losses rest on Wikipedia and the media it cites and have not been confirmed by Russia. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.
From the civil war against RENAMO to the insurgency in Cabo Delgado since 2017.

Flew Soviet-supplied MiG-21bis jets and helicopters for the government against the RENAMO insurgency. The war set FRELIMO, the liberation movement in power since independence, against RENAMO, which Rhodesia founded in 1974 and South Africa sponsored after 1980. Zimbabwe intervened from 1982 to secure its vital transport routes through Mozambique; Tanzania sent troops, and Malawi deployed soldiers from April 1987 to defend rail links. The air force was the government’s technological edge: Wikipedia’s list of MiG-21 operators says 48 MiG-21bis arrived from the USSR from 1983 for use against the guerrillas. Estimates of the war’s dead, from fighting and famine, are about one million; the researcher Mahmood Mamdani, drawing on the US Gersony Report, attributes as many as 100,000 killings to RENAMO. By 1992 most of the MiG fleet was unserviceable. Výsledek The Rome General Peace Accords were signed on 4 October 1992 and the ceasefire took effect on 15 October 1992. Air operations, sortie numbers and losses are not documented in any source this page could check; the role of Zimbabwe’s air force is not covered here. Death tolls are estimates. |

Supports ground forces with helicopters, transport and, since December 2022, Mwari reconnaissance aircraft; much of the armed air work in 2019–2021 was done by private contractors hired by the government. The insurgency began with an attack on Mocímboa da Praia in October 2017; by early 2021 Amnesty counted more than 1,300 civilians killed and 500,000 displaced. The government turned first to Russia: on 25 September 2019 an An-124 delivered two Mi-17s to Nacala for the Wagner Group, which lost men in ambushes and withdrew in March 2020, according to Wikipedia. It then hired the South African Dyck Advisory Group, which flew three Gazelles, two AS350s, an Alouette III and Bat Hawk light aircraft. Amnesty’s report of 2 March 2021 found that DAG operatives had fired machine guns from helicopters and dropped hand grenades indiscriminately into crowds, repeatedly fired at hospitals, schools and homes, and destroyed the hospital in Mocímboa da Praia in June 2020 while targeting fighters inside; Amnesty said this clearly violated international humanitarian law, and also accused government forces and the insurgents of war crimes. Rwanda deployed about 1,000 troops in July 2021 and SADC’s SAMIM from 15 July 2021; by 2024 Rwanda had about 2,500 troops and police there, partly funded by the EU. Výsledek Continuing. Rwandan forces retook Mocímboa da Praia in August 2021; SAMIM left in July 2024. The Amnesty findings are findings of Amnesty International. Neither the government’s nor DAG’s reply was reproduced in the Amnesty pages consulted, and none was found elsewhere; this page does not say there was none. Wagner’s role and losses come from Wikipedia and the media it cites; Russia has not confirmed them.
