Rwandan Air Force combat record

Every war the Rwandan Air Force has fought

The successes claimed for the government’s armed Gazelles in 1990–1994 come from secondary sources and are given as one side’s claims. Who shot down the presidential aircraft on 6 April 1994 has never been established in court: a French judge blamed the RPF leadership in 2006, while Rwanda’s Mutsinzi report of 2010 and a French ballistic report of 2012 pointed to Hutu extremists firing from the area of Kanombe military camp. UN Groups of Experts have reported RDF troops alongside M23 in eastern DR Congo, which Rwanda denies, and each government’s position on the Su-25 incidents is given as reported. The air force’s own part in the Congo wars, the Central African Republic and Mozambique is not documented, and the entries say so. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

From the civil war of 1990–1994 to the Congolese border airspace since 2022.

Rwandan Civil War1990–1994Rwandan Air Force (air arm of the Forces armées rwandaises) 1990–1994 Rwandan Patriotic Front SA 342 Gazelle, Alouette III, Islander

Flew armed helicopters in strafing and reconnaissance missions against the Rwandan Patriotic Front.

When the RPF crossed from Uganda in October 1990, the government’s small air arm was one of the few advantages it had. France sent soldiers under Operation Noroît and supplied armoured cars and helicopters; Wikipedia’s article on the Gazelle says nine armed Gazelles were exported in 1992 and flew strafing and reconnaissance missions. The same article reports that in October 1992 a single Gazelle destroyed a column of ten RPF vehicles, and cites the author Andrew Wallis for the view that the gunships stopped significant RPF advances and pushed the RPF towards guerrilla warfare. These are secondary accounts of one side’s successes and were not confirmed from another source. The cost was heavy: by the end most of the air arm had been shot down, destroyed on the ground or lost in crashes. The war’s final phase began after the presidential aircraft was shot down at Kanombe on 6 April 1994, which the UN describes as the trigger of the genocide against the Tutsi; the UN estimates more than one million people were killed in about 100 days.

Исход The RPF took Kigali on 4 July 1994 and the war ended on 18 July 1994; the former government’s forces fled to Zaire.

Aircraft numbers, losses and the October 1992 claim come from Wikipedia and the authors it cites; no Rwandan or French official account was found. Who shot down the presidential aircraft is disputed (see the FAQ).

First and Second Congo WarsZaire and the DRCRwandan Patriotic Army 1996–2002 Zairean and Congolese governments, Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Hutu armed groups Seized civilian airliners (Kitona airlift)

Rwandan forces fought in Zaire and the DRC; the best-known air episode was the August 1998 airlift of troops to Kitona in seized aircraft. No air force combat role was found in the sources.

Rwanda entered Zaire in 1996, saying Hutu militias in the refugee camps were raiding across the border, and backed the rebellion that removed Mobutu in 1997. When it turned against Laurent-Désiré Kabila in August 1998, Rwandan soldiers under James Kabarebe hijacked three aircraft and flew them to the government base at Kitona on the Atlantic coast, according to Wikipedia’s account of the Second Congo War. In the war that followed, Zimbabwe’s Hawks and Hunters flew strike missions for the Kinshasa government, but no Rwandan combat aircraft or helicopter operations were documented in the sources checked. Under the Pretoria Accord of 30 July 2002 Rwanda withdrew; it announced the end of the withdrawal on 5 October 2002.

Исход Rwanda signed the Pretoria Accord on 30 July 2002 and completed its withdrawal on 5 October 2002; MONUC confirmed the departure of more than 20,000 Rwandan soldiers.

The Rwandan air arm’s own part in these wars is UNVERIFIED and left out; the Kitona airlift used seized aircraft, not air force aircraft.

UN Mission in South SudanRwandan aviation unitВВС Руанды 2012– Mi-17 (reported)

Provides a military aviation unit of helicopters for the UN mission, alongside Rwandan infantry.

Rwanda’s largest air commitment abroad is a peacekeeping one. According to the Wikipedia article on the Rwanda Defence Force, an aviation unit of three helicopters went to the UN Mission in South Sudan in December 2012 and later grew to six, reportedly Mi-17s. The RDF says it has 4,786 contingent troops deployed in three missions, which it ranks second in the world and first in Africa among troop contributors, and in September 2026 it reported a newly deployed Rwandan contingent being welcomed at Malakal by the commander of UNMISS Sector North.

Исход Continuing; a new Rwandan contingent deployed to Malakal in September 2026.

Helicopter numbers and types come from Wikipedia; no UN or RDF page confirming the aviation unit’s current strength was reached.

Центральноафриканская РеспубликаMINUSCA and bilateral deploymentRwanda Defence Force 2014– Armed groups

Rwandan troops serve with MINUSCA; the Wikipedia article on the RDF says Rwanda provides aviation support with its ground forces. No official detail on aircraft was found.

The RDF says its contingent was the first to deploy to the Central African Republic in 2014. Rwandan troops remain with MINUSCA, and RDF news in September 2026 reported peacekeepers at work in Bria and at the Bossembele correctional centre and a Rwandan Level II hospital in Sector North-East. Wikipedia’s article on the RDF says Rwanda provides aviation support as part of its deployments there; the type and number of any aircraft were not confirmed.

Исход Continuing in September 2026 (RDF reports from Bria and Bossembele).

The air force’s role in the CAR is UNVERIFIED beyond a single Wikipedia sentence.

Cabo Delgado deploymentМозамбикRwanda Security Forces (RDF and Rwanda National Police) 2021– Insurgents in Cabo Delgado (Islamic State Mozambique)

Rwandan forces fight the Islamic State-affiliated insurgency alongside Mozambican forces; any air force contribution was not confirmed.

Rwanda announced on 9 July 2021 that it was sending a 1,000-strong joint force of soldiers and police to northern Mozambique, and with Mozambican troops it retook the port of Mocimboa da Praia on 8 August 2021. The deployment has continued since, and RDF news in September 2026 still reported Rwanda Security Forces in Palma. Wikipedia’s RDF article notes that powerboats were sent for coastal work; whether the air force sent helicopters was not confirmed in an official or major media source reached for this page, so none are listed.

Исход Continuing in September 2026.

Air force participation is UNVERIFIED and left out.

Eastern DRC and the border airspaceSu-25 incidents and M23Rwanda Defence Force 2022– Democratic Republic of the Congo (disputed) Наземная противовоздушная оборона 0

Rwanda protested Congolese Su-25 airspace violations and a Su-25 was damaged by ground fire from Rwanda in January 2023; UN experts have reported RDF troops in eastern DRC, which Rwanda denies.

As the M23 armed group advanced in North Kivu from 2022, the Congolese air force sent Su-25s against it close to the Rwandan border. Rwanda protested that a Su-25 violated its airspace on 7 November 2022, and on 24 January 2023, after Rwanda said its airspace had again been violated, a Su-25 was damaged by ground fire from Rwanda; VRT reported that Rwanda fired to "defend airspace" (summarised by Wikipedia). The Congolese government’s official response was not reached for this page. UN Groups of Experts on the DRC have reported Rwandan troops fighting alongside M23, estimating 3,000–4,000 in 2024 and higher numbers in 2025; Rwanda denies direct military involvement and objects to Congolese air operations near its border. M23 took Goma in late January 2025. A declaration of principles was signed in Washington on 27 April 2025 and a peace agreement on 27 June 2025.

Исход The DRC and Rwanda signed a peace agreement in Washington on 27 June 2025; fighting by M23 continued afterwards, according to Wikipedia.

The Su-25 details come from Wikipedia and media it cites; the UN Group of Experts reports themselves were not reached for this page, and their findings on any Rwandan air defence systems in the DRC are left out as UNVERIFIED here. Each government’s position is given as reported.
