Cameroon Air Force combat record

Каждая война, в которой участвовали ВВС Камеруна

In the Bakassi dispute each side blamed the other for the first deadly clash in 1981, and the case was settled in court, not in the air: the International Court of Justice awarded the peninsula to Cameroon in 2002, and no Cameroonian air combat there was found. In the 1984 coup attempt the government gave 71 dead and independent estimates about 1,000. Against Boko Haram and in the Anglophone regions no air strike claims or sortie figures have been published; the human rights allegations against Cameroonian forces are given with the organisations that made them and the responses found. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

From the Bakassi border clashes of 1981 to the Far North and the Anglophone regions today.

Попытка государственного переворота 1984 годаthe Yaoundé mutiny of April 1984Военно-воздушные силы Камеруна 1984 Mutinous presidential guard units

Remained loyal to President Paul Biya when palace guards rose against him.

On 6 April 1984 members of the presidential guard, mostly from the north, rose in Yaoundé after Biya ordered their transfer out of the capital. Former president Ahmadou Ahidjo was widely believed to be behind it, though he was not overtly involved. Wikipedia’s account, citing contemporary reporting, names the air force’s loyalty to the president as an important factor in the rebels’ defeat. More than 1,000 people were arrested afterwards.

Исход The coup failed after heavy fighting in Yaoundé; 35 people were sentenced to death and executed, and a six-month state of emergency followed.

What the air force actually did — flights, strikes or simply refusing to join — is not described in the sources reached; no aircraft types or sorties are given here for that reason.

Пограничный конфликт в Бакасси с Нигериейthe Bakassi peninsula disputeВооруженные силы Камеруна 1981–2008 Нигерия

No documented air combat; the air force’s part in the dispute is not established in the sources checked.

On 16 May 1981 five Nigerian soldiers were killed in a border clash: Nigeria said Cameroon fired first, Cameroon said Nigerian troops had crossed into its territory. After more incidents Cameroon took the case to the International Court of Justice on 29 March 1994, and there was a further clash on 3 February 1996. Cameroon based its claim on the 1913 Anglo-German agreement; Nigeria on earlier British treaties with local chiefs. The court ruled for Cameroon on 10 October 2002. The Greentree Agreement of 12 June 2006 set out the Nigerian withdrawal, completed on 14 August 2008. A local separatist insurgency followed, most of whose fighters laid down their arms by November 2009.

Исход Settled in court: the ICJ awarded the peninsula to Cameroon on 10 October 2002 and Nigeria withdrew by 14 August 2008.

Reports of Cameroonian air strikes or air-to-air encounters over Bakassi could not be found in the sources checked, so none is claimed here.

Airlift of troops and supplies, casualty evacuation, surveillance and helicopter attack in support of ground forces.

Cameroon was drawn into the Boko Haram war from 2014, and a regional coalition began a joint campaign on 23 January 2015. Cameroon’s air investment went largely into helicopters: Mi-17s from a 2013 Russian contract, Bell 412EPs, and refurbished Mi-24s from February 2016 assigned to the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) and Operation Alpha. The BIR also built its own drone unit at Maroua-Salak. The United States flew drones from Garoua from about 2015 and gave two Cessna 208 surveillance aircraft in 2018. On 2 August 2020 a Hercules carrying 91 troops for the Multinational Joint Task Force left the runway at Maroua in bad weather. In a 2017 report Amnesty International documented 101 cases of torture by Cameroonian forces against suspected Boko Haram supporters, mostly at the Salak base, according to Military Africa’s summary; AFRICOM said in August 2017 that it had received no reports of abuse. The US cited alleged gross violations when it halted C-130 training and a Cessna upgrade on 6 February 2019. A Cameroonian government response was not found in the sources reached.

Исход Continuing. ISWAP attacked the joint base at Wulgo and the outpost at Soueram in May 2025, according to the Institute for Security Studies.

Cameroonian air strike claims and casualty figures for this campaign were not found in sources that could be reached; the Alpha Jet’s combat use is plausible but not documented here. Whether specific helicopters belong to the air force or the BIR is not always clear.

Англоязычный конфликтthe Ambazonia war in the North-West and South-WestВоенно-воздушные силы Камеруна 2017– Ambazonian separatist armed groups Z-9WE, Bell 412EP 1

Helicopter transport and armed support from Bamenda; airlift.

Protests by lawyers and teachers from October 2016 turned into armed conflict in September 2017. Military Africa reported four Z-9WE helicopters based at Bamenda with anti-tank missiles or rockets. Separatists fired on a Camair-Co passenger aircraft landing at Bamenda on 1 December 2019, putting bullets into the cabin without injuring anyone; the Ambazonia Governing Council said the airline carried soldiers. Human Rights Watch has documented killings and disappearances by the army and abuses by separatists. More than 6,500 people had been killed by October 2024 and over 584,000 displaced, according to figures cited by Jacqui Cho in December 2025.

Исход Continuing; no negotiated settlement.

No independent report of air strikes in the Anglophone regions was found; the air force’s role is described only as far as sources go.
