Central African Republic Air Force combat record

Every war the Central African Republic Air Force has fought

The air arm entered the civil war in 2012 with almost nothing, and the air power over the country was foreign: French Mirage F1s patrolled troubled regions and took part in direct confrontations until 2014, according to Wikipedia. No source checked documents a Central African air force strike, sortie or loss, and whether Russian or Central African crews fly the Russian-supplied aircraft is not documented. The aircraft that bombed a base at Bossangoa on 26 November 2022 has not been identified; Military Africa’s suggestion that Chad was responsible is unconfirmed, and no Chadian response was found. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

The civil war since 2012, in which no combat role for the air arm is documented.

No documented combat role for the Central African air arm. Its equipment was largely lost in 2012–2014; Russian-supplied helicopters (from 2020–2021) and L-39s (from 2022) have not been publicly documented in operations.

The air arm entered the civil war with almost nothing. According to Wikipedia, citing the United Nations, most of the army’s heavy weapons and equipment were destroyed or captured by Séléka fighters in 2012–2014, and the air force was grounded by lack of funding apart from one AS 350 Ecureuil of 1987. Air power over the country in those years was foreign: French Mirage F1s patrolled troubled regions and took part in direct confrontations until 2014, Wikipedia says. From 2018 Russia sent servicemen and the Wagner Group to train government forces, and it delivered Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters in December 2020 and May 2021 and L-39s from August 2022, according to Military Africa, which links the helicopters to a Russian army aviation unit. On 26 November 2022 an unidentified aircraft bombed a base at Bossangoa used by government troops and Wagner personnel; the government said the aircraft flew north across the border and promised that the act would not go unpunished. No source checked documents a Central African air force strike, sortie or loss in the war.

Исход Continuing at a lower level; the UN lifted its arms embargo on the government in July 2024.

Whether Russian or Central African crews fly the helicopters and L-39s is not documented. Military Africa suggested that Chad was behind the November 2022 strike; this was not confirmed, and no Chadian response was found in the sources checked. Reports by the UN Panel of Experts on aircraft in the country were not reviewed for this page.
