Rotores de Portugal: how the team came to be and what it flies today

Alouettes on display

Rotores de Portugal was created in April 1976 by order of the Air Force Chief of Staff, flying the Aérospatiale Alouette III, then the Air Force’s standard light helicopter. It began with Esquadra 33 at Tancos (1976–1980) and passed to Esquadra 102 (1982–1992) and Esquadra 111 (1993–1994), flying two to four helicopters depending on the period. According to Wikipedia it gave 41 demonstrations over its whole history.

The last revival

In 2005 the team was reactivated within Esquadra 552 ‘Zangões’ at Beja, with helicopters in a special livery carrying the national colours and the team’s name, and from 2006 it flew three display aircraft with a team of five officers and six enlisted personnel. It stopped in 2010, as the Air Force prepared to replace the Alouette III with the AgustaWestland AW119 Koala; the last Portuguese Alouette III flew on 17 June 2020.
