Lesotho Defence Force Air Wing combat record

The 1998 crisis and the Lesotho Defence Force Air Wing

After a disputed election in 1998 the government faced, in Wikipedia’s words, rebellion in the army, and asked for outside help: South African troops, followed by Botswana’s, entered Lesotho under SADC auspices on 22 September 1998 and stayed until May 1999, in what was described as an intervention to restore democracy and the rule of law. No source checked records the Air Wing flying in the crisis, and no air role is claimed; casualty figures were not found in the sources checked and are not given. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

The SADC intervention of 1998–1999, in which no Air Wing flying is documented.

Not documented. The Air Wing was part of a Defence Force in which, according to Wikipedia, there was rebellion; no source checked describes its aircraft flying during the crisis.

After a disputed general election in 1998, Lesotho’s Lesotho Congress for Democracy government faced protests and, in Wikipedia’s words, rebellion in the army, and asked for outside military help. On 22 September 1998 South African troops entered the country, followed by Botswana’s, under the umbrella of the Southern African Development Community; the operation was described as an intervention to restore democracy and the rule of law. Wikipedia gives the South African contingent as 1,820. Widespread arson, violence and looting followed, and the central business district of Maseru was burned by opposition supporters. The force stayed about seven months. It is listed here because the brief asks for it and because it reshaped the Defence Force, but no source checked records the Air Wing flying in it, and no air role is claimed.

Sonuç The intervention force stayed until May 1999; the Defence Force was afterwards downsized and retrained with South African and, from 2001, Indian help.

Casualty figures were not found in the sources checked and are not given. Allies and opponents are left empty because the Defence Force itself was divided and the Air Wing’s position is not documented.
