Lesotho Savunma Kuvvetleri Hava Kanadı
The Lesotho Defence Force Air Wing grew out of a police mobile unit’s flight in 1978, joined the army in the 1980s and today flies about eight helicopters and light aircraft from Mejametalana in Maseru — a mountain rescue, medevac and government transport service for a kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, whose air force trains its pilots.
The Lesotho Defence Force Air Wing story: a police flight in 1978, a crisis in 1998 and helicopters for the mountains
1978: a flight for the Police Mobile Unit
Lesotho’s military air arm began, according to Wikipedia’s article on the Lesotho Defence Force, as a 1978 offshoot of the paramilitary Police Mobile Unit. Its first aircraft were two Short Skyvan twin-turboprop short take-off transports, a leased Cessna A152 Aerobat, two MBB Bo 105 helicopters and a Bell 47G helicopter converted to turboshaft power. In a mountainous country, that mix — rugged transports that could use short strips and helicopters that could reach villages cut off by snow — set the pattern for everything since. The air arm was a policing and government service from the start, not a combat force.
1983–1986: delayed deliveries and a coup
Wikipedia records that deliveries of new equipment were held up from 1983 to 1986 because of South African influence over the landlocked kingdom, and that this changed after the military coup of 1986. By the middle of the 1980s the Police Mobile Unit and its air squadron had been merged into what became the Lesotho Defence Force. No source checked gives a precise date for the transfer, or for the arrival and retirement of each early type; this page lists them as former aircraft without dates.
1998: the crisis and the SADC intervention
In 1998 a disputed election led to a political crisis and, in the words of Wikipedia’s article on the intervention, "rebellion in the army". The Lesotho Congress for Democracy government asked for outside help, and on 22 September 1998 South African troops, followed by Botswana’s, entered Lesotho under the banner of the Southern African Development Community; it was described as an intervention to restore democracy and the rule of law. Wikipedia gives the South African force as 1,820 strong; the occupation lasted until May 1999. The centre of Maseru was burned and looted by opposition supporters. No source checked describes any role for the Air Wing’s aircraft. defenceWeb notes that the Defence Force was then downsized and retrained with help from South Africa and, from 2001, India.
2017–2019: the EC135 loss and the H125s
The modern fleet is built around helicopters. Military Africa reports that an EC135 crashed in April 2017 and was replaced by Airbus H125s: two entered service in 2017 and 2018, and a third, named Mokhele and numbered LDF 23, was commissioned at Mejametalana on 14 December 2018 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Monyane Moleleki and the LDF commander, Lieutenant General Mojalefa Letsoela. He said it would be used for law enforcement, transporting officials, search and rescue and emergency evacuations, and that it was chosen for its performance in rugged terrain and bad weather. Military Africa reported a further H125 acquisition in November 2019.
2026: a small mountain helicopter service
In 2026 defenceWeb counts about 100 Air Wing personnel under Brigadier General Daemane Michaela Madamane, commander since 2018, with one CASA C-212, one GippsAero GA8, three Bell 412s, three H125s and a Bell 206 of unclear status; Wikipedia lists two C-212s. defenceWeb’s April 2026 military profile names the H125s as the force’s main recent modernisation, and its country page says the South African Air Force still trains Lesotho’s pilots and that the Air Wing took part in the regional air force exercise Blue Lugwasho in 2025. It is a small, practical service whose value is measured in rescues and medical flights, not in combat power.
