United spent a fortnight teasing this announcement with a reality-TV-style video full of coded clues, which the internet duly spent a fortnight decoding. On Tuesday morning, in a hangar at Newark, the airline finally said it out loud.
Ten new international cities. Eight of them served by no other American airline. And a single-aisle jet that will fly Newark to Ibiza.
United is calling it the largest international network expansion in its history, and on the numbers that is hard to argue with.

The ten
The list mixes places you would expect a large carrier to add with places you really would not.
From Newark: Luxembourg City from 2 April, daily. Ljubljana from 12 May, four times a week. Olbia in Sardinia from 27 May. Catania in Sicily from 28 May. Ibiza from 31 May. Valencia from 2 June. Marseille from 4 June, daily. Terceira in the Azores from 9 June.
From Washington Dulles, Toulouse from 26 April, daily. From San Francisco, Okinawa from 27 March, three times a week on a Boeing 777-200ER.
Beyond the new cities, Los Angeles gains a daily Osaka service from 27 March, making United the only airline serving Osaka from two cities in the continental United States. Washington Dulles picks up Milan three times a week from 28 May. Denver gets a daily Paris service from 27 May. San Francisco to Tel Aviv restarts on 28 March.

What the XLR actually changes
Five of the new routes go to the A321XLR: Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille. That is the entire point of the aeroplane.
None of those cities generates enough transatlantic traffic to fill a widebody every day. In network-planning terms they were too small to serve at all. A long-range narrowbody changes the arithmetic, because the route only has to fill a smaller cabin. Markets that could never justify a 767 suddenly work.
United has not treated it as a downgrade. The XLR carries 20 Polaris suites with privacy doors and 12 Premium Plus seats, 32 premium seats in all, which is sixteen more than the Boeing 757-200 that used to do this job. There is free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, 4K OLED screens with Bluetooth, a snack bar in economy, and an Economy Plus row with extra elbow room and a shared table across a permanently blocked middle seat.

Newark is the whole strategy
Eight of the ten new cities leave from Newark. That is not an accident.
United has added 58 international destinations since 2017 and now serves more than 160. It says it will fly to more destinations in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France than any other US carrier. Reuters reported on Tuesday that the airline expects enough A321XLR deliveries to support the European expansion next summer, which is the quiet caveat underneath all of this: the plan depends on Airbus hitting its delivery schedule.
The XLR starts on selected domestic routes in September before moving to international flying on 1 December, beginning with Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin. All the new routes remain subject to government approval.
There is something quietly satisfying about the fact that the most interesting aircraft in transatlantic flying right now is a narrowbody. For thirty years the story was bigger jets into bigger hubs. The A321XLR argues the opposite, and Ibiza from Newark is what that argument looks like in a timetable.
