Ukraine spent three years learning how to shoot down Shaheds cheaply. Machine guns on pickup trucks. Electronic warfare. Then, cleverest of all, small propeller-driven interceptor drones that cost a few thousand dollars and rammed a target worth far more. By the winter of 2026 that system was catching almost everything.
Then Russia bolted a jet engine to the Shahed, and the numbers started sliding. On 27 August, Ukraine intercepted 88 percent of incoming drones. On 31 August it was 79 percent. Against the old propeller Geran, the figure had been 95 to 98 percent.
A drop from 98 to 79 sounds modest until you do the arithmetic on a night when several hundred drones are launched. That is the pressure Kyiv is now under, and its answer has a name: Alexa Spatium, the country's first jet-powered interceptor.

Why speed broke the cheap defence
The piston-engined Geran-2, Russia's licence-built Shahed-136, putters along at about 185 km/h. That is slow enough for a man with a heavy machine gun to track, and slow enough for a cheap quadcopter or propeller interceptor to climb into its path and take it out. Ukraine industrialised that answer and it worked.
The jet versions cruise somewhere between 300 and 400 km/h. That single change invalidates most of the stack. A propeller interceptor that cannot exceed the target's speed cannot chase it down. A mobile fire team gets a fraction of the tracking time. The drone also tends to fly higher, which pushes it out of reach of small-arms fire entirely.

Russia has changed how it uses them, too. Rather than saving drones for one saturating night raid, Meduza reports that Russian forces now send three or four jet-powered drones, sometimes as many as ten, roughly every half hour. That keeps air-raid alerts running almost continuously and grinds down the crews who have to respond to each one.
What Alexa Spatium actually is
Announced by Ukraine's defence ministry in the last week of August, Alexa Spatium is described as the country's first jet-powered drone interceptor. It is small, roughly 1.5 by 1.7 metres, fits in a pickup, and launches from a mobile catapult that a crew can set up in minutes.
The guidance is deliberately flexible: it can fly to pre-programmed coordinates or be flown directly by an operator, using television and infrared search and targeting systems with a video downlink. Warheads can be swapped depending on the mission, with high-explosive fragmentation, shaped-charge and thermobaric options. Its stated targets are the Geran-3, Geran-4, Geran-5 and Shahed-131, plus reconnaissance drones and helicopters.
The detail that stands out is what happens when it does not find its target. Unlike a one-way interceptor, Alexa Spatium is built to return to its launch site and be sent up again. For a country counting every unit, a reusable interceptor is worth several expendable ones.
A few hundred, against thousands
The problem is arithmetic again, and this time it runs against Kyiv. A Ukrainian official told the Wall Street Journal that the country does have drones capable of shooting down the newest Geran models, but only a few hundred of them, far short of the thousands it needs.
Russia, meanwhile, is producing jet Gerans at scale from the plant at Yelabuga, and Ukrainian military intelligence assesses that jet output has already overtaken the piston version. Sources in Ukraine's defence industry told the BBC they expect a workable counter within the next month. Whether that means fielded in numbers or merely demonstrated is the question that matters.
Ukraine is not alone in chasing this problem. Britain's Cambridge Aerospace has been developing Skyhammer, a comparable turbojet counter-drone interceptor guided by an X-band radar seeker. Every country watching this war is drawing the same conclusion: shooting down a cheap drone with an expensive missile is a losing trade, and the replacement has to be fast, small and affordable all at once.
The metric to watch
Forget production announcements and unveiling photographs. The number that tells you who is winning this particular duel is the nightly interception percentage, and right now it is moving in Russia's favour.
If Alexa Spatium and whatever follows it can push that figure back toward the nineties, the jet Shahed becomes an expensive way to achieve very little. If it stays in the seventies through the autumn, Russia has found a way to make Ukrainian air defence unaffordable, one half-hourly pinprick at a time.
