UAVision
A Portuguese autopilot maker that taught itself to build whole drones and now supplies all three Portuguese armed services, Nigeria and Ukraine from a rural site north of Lisbon.
UAVision: the company and the aircraft that made its name
Autopilots first
UAVision did not begin by building aircraft. Founded in the mid-2000s at Ventosa, in the municipality of Alenquer north of Lisbon, it made autopilots and communication systems for other people’s unmanned aircraft. In 2009 it set up its own aeronautical design and production department, and in 2016 added two specialist units: one for long-range data links, which produced the StormCOMM system, and one for stabilised electro-optical gimbals. The company says all of its systems are engineered and built in-house.
Drones for every service
Its flagship is the OGASSA OGS42 family, flown in fixed-wing and vertical take-off versions by the Portuguese Air Force and Navy, while the smaller SPYRO serves the Navy, the National Republican Guard and the criminal police. The company has worked closely with the European Union and the Portuguese Armed Forces and has taken part in NATO’s REP(MUS) maritime unmanned systems exercise since 2019.
From the Atlantic to Ukraine
Exports have taken UAVision drones to four continents, with customers or markets in Brazil, Nigeria, Angola, South Korea, India, the UAE and Germany. The Nigerian Air Force is a user, and OGS42s have been supplied to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Its ELANUS loitering munition was selected from more than 140 European entries to advance in the European Defence Agency’s Sentinel Strike Challenge in 2026.
