Almost every maritime patrol aircraft in history has been something else first. The P-3 Orion was an airliner. The Nimrod was the Comet. The P-8 is a 737. You take a tube with wings and long legs, and you fill it with sonar equipment.
The Breguet Atlantic is the exception. It was designed from a blank sheet to hunt submarines and nothing else. And it was built by a consortium of French, German, Dutch, Belgian and Italian companies eight years before Airbus existed.

The Committee That Actually Worked
In December 1956 the NATO Council decided the alliance needed a long-range maritime patrol aircraft to replace the P2V Neptune. A specification went out in 1958. Thirty-one projects were submitted. On 30 January 1959 the armaments committee picked the Breguet Br 1150, unanimously.
Then came the genuinely novel part. Rather than one country building it, SECBAT was formed in October 1961: Breguet and Sud-Aviation from France, Dornier and MBB from Germany, Fokker from the Netherlands, SABCA from Belgium, and from 1968 Aeritalia and Alfa Romeo from Italy. The Tyne engines were built by a parallel consortium of Rolls-Royce, SNECMA, MTU and FN.
This is the direct organisational ancestor of Panavia, formed in 1969 to build the Tornado, and of Airbus in 1970. The Atlantic proved that several European countries could jointly design, build and field a complex military aircraft without the programme collapsing into national infighting. It is a considerably more important precedent than the aircraft’s obscurity suggests.
Designed Around the Job
Being purpose-built shows. The Atlantic has a “double-bubble” fuselage: a pressurised upper lobe for the twelve-man crew and their consoles, and an unpressurised lower lobe containing a nine-metre weapons bay.

An adapted airliner cannot easily do that. Its floor is structural and its belly is full of undercarriage and baggage hold. The Atlantic could carry torpedoes, depth charges and mines internally, keeping them out of the airflow and letting the aircraft loiter for eighteen hours on two turboprops.
The aerodynamics were tuned for the same mission: slow, low, and manoeuvrable just above the waves.
With a light load in hot weather, that enormous wing has the opposite effect. Crews describe it floating above the runway and refusing to settle, at which point you have to push it firmly onto the concrete.
A Bomber by Accident
The Atlantic outlived the Cold War mission it was designed for, and found others.

French Atlantics served as an airborne headquarters over Chad in 1987, flew over Kosovo in 1999, and in January 2013 an Atlantique 2 dropped the first GBU-12 laser-guided bomb of Operation Serval in Mali. A maritime patrol aircraft became a precision strike platform over the Sahara because it was the aircraft that happened to be overhead with the endurance to wait.
The submarine mission has now returned.
Janicot has also noted the practical consequence: crews now log around 330 flying hours a year, some reaching 410, against barely 300 when he was a young pilot in the 1990s. As he puts it, the submarine threat has become a reality again.
One Operator Left
The Netherlands grounded its Atlantics in 1981 after losing three of nine, and replaced them with the P-3 Orion — the aircraft the Atlantic had beaten in the original competition. Germany moved to ex-Dutch P-3Cs in 2005 and retired its last signals intelligence Atlantics by 2010. Italy retired its eighteen in 2017. Pakistan’s went in 2012, after one had been shot down by an Indian MiG-21 in August 1999, killing all sixteen aboard.
France is the last operator, and has just finished modernising the fleet. The Standard 6 upgrade fits a Thales Searchmaster AESA radar derived from the Rafale’s, a new digital acoustic subsystem and a new electro-optical turret. The eighteenth and final upgraded aircraft was handed over on 17 February 2026, extending service beyond 2030.
The replacement, under the PATMAR FUTUR programme, is expected around 2035 and will probably be an Airbus A321 MPA. Which is to say: an airliner with sonar equipment in it.
Sixty-five years after NATO asked for a purpose-built submarine hunter and got one, everybody has gone back to converting airliners. The Atlantic was the only one of its kind, and it will almost certainly stay that way.
