Israel Built a Jet That Attacks With Noise

Most combat aircraft announced at airshows are defined by what they carry. Israel Aerospace Industries spent Monday introducing one defined by what it broadcasts.

ELLYON has no bomb bay and no missile rails. Its weapon is a wideband electronically scanned jammer, and its stated purpose is to sit hundreds of kilometres outside an enemy's air defences and make their radars and radios useless from there — while simultaneously listening to everything those same emitters give away.

It is not a new idea. It is an unusually complete execution of one.

Why stand-off jamming is hard

The physics are worth understanding, because they explain the whole design.

A radar has to work twice. Its energy travels out to the target and then has to come back, so the returning signal falls off with the fourth power of distance. A jammer only has to travel one way, so its signal falls off with the square of distance. That asymmetry is why a jammer can, in principle, drown out a radar from far outside the radar's own detection range.

In practice, doing it from hundreds of kilometres away against a modern, frequency-agile, digitally processed air-defence radar requires enormous effective radiated power aimed very precisely. IAI's answer is multibeam AESA — an array that can form several independent beams and put energy exactly where it is needed rather than spraying it across the sky.

That is the physically coherent approach. It is also entirely unverified: IAI has published no power figures, no test data, and no independent assessment exists.

Listening and shouting at the same time

The genuinely interesting claim is that ELLYON does both jobs on one sortie. Historically, electronic intelligence and electronic attack have sat in different aircraft, for an obvious reason: it is difficult to listen carefully while you are the loudest thing in the sky.

IAI says ELLYON can jam radar and communications during the same flight while continuing to collect. Doing that requires very careful management of your own emissions so the aircraft does not deafen its own receivers — which is presumably part of what ELTA's AI-driven Mission Management System is for.

This is where ELLYON separates from the rest of the IAI catalogue. It should not be confused with the ELI-3150 ISTAR aircraft, which carries a broadly similar sensor fit but no electronic attack capability. Nor is it Oron, the G550-based intelligence aircraft that entered Israeli service during the Gaza war and flew roughly a hundred sorties in its first months. ELLYON is closest in spirit to Oron, with the addition of the jamming mission Oron does not have.

The Bombardier question

One detail says a lot about who IAI thinks will buy this. ELTA's special-mission aircraft have overwhelmingly been built on Gulfstream G550 airframes — Oron, the CAEW early-warning aircraft, and a long line before them. ELLYON's datasheet specifies a Bombardier Global 6500 instead.

The press material simultaneously insists the system is platform-agnostic, which is the sort of thing a manufacturer says when it wants to sell to customers who already operate something else, and when it would rather not depend on a single airframe supplier.

Nobody has ordered one. There is no announced price and no in-service date. For now ELLYON is a very detailed proposal from a company with a long record of turning exactly this kind of proposal into an aircraft that flies — and a set of range claims that will stay claims until somebody publishes a number.
