Paramount Group: the company and the aircraft that made its name

From armour to air

Ivor Ichikowitz founded Paramount Group in 1994 in Sandton, and for its first decade it was about land: armoured vehicles such as the Marauder, Mbombe and Matador. In 2006 it took to the air by buying surplus South African Air Force Mirage F1s, which its subsidiary Paramount Aerospace Systems flies as aggressor aircraft and maintenance trainers for governments. By 2016 it claimed government clients in 28 countries.

The Mwari

Its big aviation bet was the AHRLAC, launched in 2011 with Aerosud: a twin-boom, forward-swept pusher with a PT6A, a steep tandem cockpit borrowed from helicopter thinking, and parts designed for jigless assembly. Billed as the first fully indigenous military aircraft developed in Africa, it first flew at Wonderboom on 26 July 2014. Boeing joined in 2016 to develop the armed Mwari, and in the US it was offered as the Bronco II.

Mirages, rescues and lawsuits

The road was rough. The programme went into business rescue in February 2019 and its 140 staff were sent home, before restarting in 2020. In September 2022 Paramount announced the first sales, nine aircraft for two air forces, and Albania received two. In August 2024 some non-operating entities filed for Chapter 11 in Delaware after an arbitration loss to a Middle Eastern company, and the South African holding company entered business rescue that November, though the Mwari business was not part of the filing.
