Turkey regards the YPG as part of the PKK, which the YPG and its US partners reject; Iraq protested the Claw operations. The account of the 2016 coup attempt is the prosecution’s; Turkey blames the Gülen movement, which denies involvement. Plotters used army helicopters from Güvercinlik against state targets and to move troops and ammunition. According to the indictment summarised by Hürriyet Daily News, the Land Forces commander, General Salih Zeki Çolak, inspected the Army Aviation School at Güvercinlik from 18:36 to 21:08 on 15 July while three Cobras and an ATAK were being loaded with ammunition and two Sikorskys rigged for troops, without recognising the preparations. The school’s commander, General Hakan Atınç, was handcuffed by Major Okan Kocakurt; prosecutors named the deputy commander, Brigadier General Ünsal Coşkun, as a member of the Gülen network and said a cargo-helicopter battalion commander flew putschists to the Türksat centre and more than a tonne of ammunition to Akıncı. English Wikipedia says helicopters bombed the police special forces and police aviation headquarters at Gölbaşı, fired on parliament at 03:08 and attacked the hotel where President Erdoğan was staying around 04:00. A Black Hawk landed at Alexandroupoli in Greece at 00:50 on 16 July with eight servicemen, who sought asylum; Greece’s Supreme Court refused extradition in January 2017. Attack helicopters and TB2 drones supporting Turkish and allied Syrian ground forces. The Land Forces’ TB2 S5 flew in Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch, Peace Spring and Spring Shield, according to SavunmaSanayiST. Operation Olive Branch against the YPG in Afrin ran from 20 January to 24 March 2018. On 10 February a T129 went down at about 13:00 and both crew were killed. President Erdoğan said it was shot down and warned that the perpetrators would pay a heavy price; Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said one of two ATAKs on a mission in Afrin had crashed for reasons not yet clear, and the General Staff confirmed a crash without giving a cause. The SDF and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was shot down; English Wikipedia’s T129 article attributes it to YPG anti-aircraft fire. Turkey says the YPG and the PKK are one organisation; the YPG and its US partners rejected that. English Wikipedia records that during Operation Claw in 2019 Turkish ATAK helicopters hit PKK targets at Birkim on 14 August and in the Hakurk region on 19 August, and that on 12 September troops were set down by helicopter on Karachal mountain to build a new base. Claw-Eagle and Claw-Tiger followed in 2020. On 4 September 2022 a Sikorsky-type helicopter made an emergency landing on a supply flight in the Claw-Lock zone; one soldier, Ümit Kesti, was killed and seven were rescued. The Land Forces’ TB2 S5 also flew in the Claw operations.
